I am one of those many young people out there like the commentator on Temasek Times above who have grown disillusioned of Singapore and wanting to emigrate out of here. Like him, I always go to explain at great lengths of how Singapore is really like to curious foreigners over a chat.

My girlfriend is a S-pass holder and she totally agrees with what I’ve said about Singapore’s system and the sorry state of affairs here and how we will suffer like the rest with a government who takes their citizens for granted.

We intend to get married this year but family planning or baby making is a no-no until we settled down in either Sans Franscisco(her cousin’s family is there already) or Auckland(my preference).

I am currently getting my engineering degree and working full time to save up a modest fund by 2014 when I graduated.

My current job as an engineer in a specialized trade is in the long term skill shortage list for immigration, and what attracted me is they are paying 2 to 3 times higher than what I’m getting here in Singapore.

In Singapore, my trade is in high demand, but apparently the Singapore employers wants to have their cake and eat it too. They resorted to hiring cheap foreign engineers and expected the existing engineers to train them, which is impossible without the necessary qualifications in knowledge.

These foreign engineers have a engineering degree but they are at best technician-quality and not engineers who innovate solutions and manage a team. The main reason why productivity is falling especially in my trade is because they hardly think about plausible solutions or simply just talk…perhaps talking is strenuous as their communication skills are poor, probably thinking too as their mindset are unfortunately very much framed up.

There are enough frustrations working with low quality foreigners in our midst and I don’t see why I should put up working with them learning nothing new and always teaching, and if I want to teach, I might as well go back to be a A-Maths tutor like during my National Slavery days where I could easily earn more doing it full time today than what I could get now.

In countries like New Zealand, they have a sound social safety net and their society’s order and economic indicators would never become as polarized and extreme like Singapore’s. Why? Simply because their governance is built on the choice of the people, and this is democracy I’m talking about.

The citizens will moderate the country’s system with opposing forces always resonating among themselves to attract the majority’s support. But in Singapore, all of us have to listen to the PAP because the Opposition is kept very weak.

There are no adaptations of any logical proposals that doesn’t run align with PAP’s political inclinations and the PAP will simply dismiss them as populist or radical(this choice of word by the PAP is a scare tactic…radical…oh my…could be a terrorist’s idea…like the wage shock therapy from Dr Lim Chong Yah).

With PAP grassroot leaders and the mainstream media always currying favors by presenting skewed ground sentiments to their MPs and Ministers, Singaporeans ended up voiceless and policies become disconnected with reality. Look no further than at Lee Hsien Loong’s facebook. That is the breeding ground of radical PAP extremists.

There are thousands of cult-like responses supporting the PAP and they would attack any anti-PAP sentiments or have the moderator deleting them like this[Link]. I sometimes wonder if I served National Slavery to protect these disgusting people, and there is 60% like them in Singapore.

My decision to leave Singapore is more motivated by the push factors that are largely disappointments of Singapore’s system than the pull factors of retirement and family-friendly environments in New Zealand and US. Singapore is my home, I love Singapore especially when I grew up during the golden years that is the 1990s. I would like my children to grow up in the 1990s Singapore the way I did but that is no longer possible here.

On my conscience level, at least I have decided to leave Singapore with a fight(that is to partake in the Opposition). I fought, I lost and now I’m gone because my family come first. People around me are telling me to stick for 2016 Elections and I told them I am not going to waste my youth here and I am telling my friends to leave as well, for my very last struggle with the PAP is to deny them the very young people they need to sustain their political dominance.

Good riddance. The idiot was complaining about FT the entire article yet plans to marry one and go off to some other country to become a FT

As a politician and potential leader of Singapore, he has a job to look after everyone, including those that didnt vote for him yet he calls them disgusting

Best of all if pple out there actually thought the opposition candidates are improving during GE 2011, all they need to do is read this idiots article. If this goes viral, he'd had single handedly push the opposition movement back by a couple of years

It's amazing how he never seem to realize this. The moron even had the audacity to come out and defend his stupid piece of crap

It's never too late to realise that this country isn't a nation at all. I'm rather perplexed though: why the hell did he leave a cuntry of sheep for another cuntry of sheep?

at least he is not fucked by lky's cronies like i am!

he should stay and continues the fight against PAP. but since he wants to leave. ok. fuck off. goodbye.

he can call sam leong and go out for bicycling when he is there.

KNN have you even fought against the PAP? The indoctrination of Kuan Yew is working. There is still a plethora of bloody sinkies on both sides of the political spectrum who are dumb enough to sacrifice their self-interests for this non-cuntry.

He talks about NZ as if it's close to Utopia. In reality, it's anything but.

It's true that the citizens moderate the system but the net result is not a triumph of democracy. Instead, the consequence is a weak, indecisive govt that is unable to take the necessary but unpopular measures to ensure progress. The proportional representation system (which some sinkies are clamoring for) ensures that the tail wags the dog.

NZ is going backwards as a result and is no longer able to fund it's "safety net" and has to borrow $380 MILLION per week just to pay the bills. The situation is unsustainable and the wheels are going to come off the wagon sooner rather than later.

The govt knows what needs to be done but there is no political will to change tack as it will result in certain defeat at the next election. The fact that NZ has a 3 year electoral cycle makes things even worse as it means that in each term of office, the govt only has about a year to implement changes. The 1st year is settling in. The 3rd year is in election mode so that leaves only year 2 to actually perform the job of running the country.

Since nothing of significance can be done in a year, the bottom line is that nothing gets done. Many projects which are essential have been on the planning table for more than 2 decades and remain on the drawing board. The Greens block progress because of environmental concerns. Maori block progress because it's their sacred land and their chief was buried in the vicinity, the right wing parties vote against the project when the left are in power and the left do the same when the right is in power. Stalemate is the net result and NZ as a whole is that much poorer as a consequence of constant bickering and posturing in the battle for a memorable soundbite. I would not wish the NZ system upon my worst enemy!

I can't comment on his other possible destination because I haven't lived there for more than 2 decades. From what I gather, it's probably no better but at least the USA can't default on payments as it has the option of printing money. However, I can say with complete confidence that the Singapore system is far superior compared to NZ and I haven't even started to rant about the billions of dollars awarded in "treaty settlements" to those lazy fat lumps of lard that are hell bent on holding up progress across the country.

Once I get too old for my outdoor hobbies, my next, and perhaps final destination before my demise will be Monaco. The zero taxation means I don't have to fund losers. The weak Euro means there are some good deals with excellent views. The close proximity to Europe will give me the opportunity to tour the region and I can watch the Tour-de-France from some cafe on the Champs Elysees

His article was reasonable and fair. It is his point of view.

Your response is disgusting and typically sinkie! you sound like the disgusting 60% he's referring to and running away from.

His article was reasonable and fair.

His article is reasonable and fair but it displays his naiveté. The world isn't black and white. It is many shades of grey.

U should tell this to the PAP

I agree wholeheartedly. If someone says they want to emigrate to NZ because they can pretty much do as they please with minimal state interference, I'd be the first to offer my support and encouragement. You can smoke weed here without facing the gallows. You can live in sin and have children out of wedlock without consequence or stigma. You can drive a 40 year old jalopy without having to worry about COE prices.

However, when the reason given is that the Singapore system is screwed and the NZ system is better, I feel obliged to correct this misconception. Those who want to see a country progress so that opportunities are created for their future generations shouldn't have NZ on their destination list.

You dont seem to have lived in Spore for some time so i dont think you know what it has become.

The country has progressed; but only for a selected few. The rest have been left behind and do not see a good future for their chidlren who will most probably end up as slaves in one way or another. The standard of living is low and consumtion low; middle income salaries wiped out by massive hyperinflation that the PAP Gov under-reports

I've visited NZ a few times; every bugger is so bloody lazy. Doesnt take much to succeed.

An analogy summarises the situation perfectly: I'd rather be a king in some 3rd world village than a slave in modern dynamic spore!

People who want to be kings in 3rd world villages shouldn't come to NZ. They should emigrate to countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

There are no kings in NZ. If you try to behave like one, the NZ system will chop you down to size in no time at all. I'll agree it's better to be a loser in NZ than in Singapore. However, someone who wants to grab opportunities and make a success of his/her life will be far better off in Singapore. The competition is intense and at times unforgiving but would you rather be part of a successful, thriving economy or would you prefer to laze around watching cows eating grass?

I know many who are in Thailand/cambodia etc.. and are living like kings. NZ may not be a good example but you get my point.

Competition - there is no free market competition but a monopoly at play. The PAP has picked winners and losers. Winers - existing owners of multiple properties/Landlords/REITs/HDB/GLCs/Banks. Losers - everybody else.
