Businessman appeals against over driving ban

By Elena Chong

A BUSINESSMAN has lodged an appeal against a five-year driving ban imposed by a judge for negligently causing the death of a nine-year-old pedestrian two years ago.

Phang Say Lang, 54, had paid an $8,000 fine in May after pleading guilty to causing the death of Chen Chunyu along Boon Lay Way by failing to keep a proper lookout.

He was also banned from driving for five years.

The Primary 2 student had walked from a bus stop to cross the road to go to school on the opposite side of the road when he was hit by Phang's Lexus on Sept 18, 2009.

He was holding an umbrella and sheltering himself from the rain.

The place where he was hit was 135.6m away from the pedestrian crossing at the traffic lights at the junction of Boon Lay Way and Corporation Road.

The left front wing mirror and left windscreen pillar of Phang's car hit the right side of the boy, who had arrived here two months earlier.

He was taken to hospital where he died six days later.
