Businessman acquitted of beating red light

Few motorists would challenge a charge of beating a red light, but Mr Sia Yop Seng did - and won.

The 63-year-old businessman was acquitted of the offence by a district court last month. However, the prosecution has appealed, and the case is expected to go up to the High Court.

In her judgment issued last week, District Judge Wong Choon Ning said she was not convinced that the vehicle Senior Staff Sergeant Bonojo Yahman saw jumping the light at the junction of West Coast Highway and Jalan Buroh was the van driven by Mr Sia. The incident occurred at about 4pm on Jan 31, 2010.

She noted that when testifying, the officer had reduced the distance from where he had said he spotted the violation.

He also insisted on the accuracy of his sketch of the scene, despite Mr Sia's protests. The officer's sketch did not show a road cutting through the roundabout at the junction.

The court had asked for photographs of the scene, and they showed that Senior Staff Sgt Bonojo's sketch was inaccurate.
