An SMRT bus driver was charged on Monday with causing the death of a passenger and injuring another in an accident which occurred in July this year.
Zhang Kun, 39, is accused of causing the death of Malaysian Sasikumar Gunasakaran, 19, by doing a rash act along the slip road of Bukit Timah Expressway into Dairy Farm Road at about 8.55am on July 21. He allegedly drove at 78kmh when the speed limit imposed was 50kmh. While negotiating a sharp left bend, he lost control of the 700A bus which veered perpendicularly across the road and crossed over the centre divider before hitting a concrete barrier and toppled over.
The second charge states that he caused hurt to the other passenger, Mr Ramanand Panday, 50, by doing an act so rashly as to endanger life. Mr Sasikumar was found crushed between seats at the front part of the bus. His body had to be extricated by Singapore Civil Defence Force officers.
Zhang, who is represented by Mr M. Ravi, will appear in court again on Jan 27. If convicted of causing death by a rash act, he could be jailed for up to five years and/or fined. Causing hurt by doing a rash act is punishable with up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $5,000.
PRC DRIVER IN FATAL DAIRY FARM ROAD BUS CRASH CHARGED IN COURT
Post date: 30 Dec 2013 - 5:24pm
The SMRT driver who was driving the speeding bus which was caught on video flipping over on Dairy Farm Road earlier in July has been charged in court with causing the death of one passenger as well as injuring another.
Zhang Kun, 39, a Chinese National is accused of causing the death of a 19 year old Sasikumar Gunasakaran, a Malaysian passenger on his bus.
He is also charged with causing injury to Mr Ramanand Panday, 50 who was crushed between two seats near the front of the bus.
Zhang has been charged with a rash act causing these two incidents.
The fatal accident occurred in the morning of July 21s this year near Dairy Farm Road and Bukit Timah Expressway. The driver was going at about 78km/hr when the speed limit was only 50km/h. As he was trying to turn left, he lost control of the bus and it smashed through the middle divider, across the opposite lane and came to a stop on its side on the other side of the road.
The whole incident was caught on video by a passing car's dash cam and went viral online.
At the time of the incident, authorities had purposely kept the nationality of the driver secret. Perhaps it was in an effort to diffuse public anger as more Singaporeans would feel angry when they found out it was a foreign driver.
Zhang was officially charged in court today and will appear again on the 27th of January. He has appointed M Ravi as his legal representative and faces a potential maximum sentence of 5 years and a fine for causing death by rash act.
He could also face an additional 1 year jail and/or a fine up to $5,000 for causing hurt by rash act.
