The Public Transport Council (PTC) has fined SBS Transit and SMRT Buses $700 and $300 respectively, for not meeting the Quality of Service, or QoS, standards set for basic bus services
In a statement released on Friday, the PTC said that its latest review of public transport operators, conducted from Dec 1 last year to May 31 this year, showed that the two companies have failed to make the grade in two areas: reliability and loading.
Checks by the PTC over the six-month period showed that both SBS Transit and SMRT Buses had, on some occasions, failed to ensure their buses leave interchanges and terminals not more than five minutes from the scheduled timing, for at least 85 per cent of all daily trips.
They also did not make sure that the buses are not more than 95 per cent full during weekday peak hours.
Mr Gerard Ee, chairman of the PTC, said: 'Although the operators have generally been able to meet the Quality of Service standards set for basic bus services, the latest performance results indicate that they face some challenges in continuing to deliver service quality as public transport ridership increases.'
