unfortunately, these are the "diehard" volunteers that are there so that they can get "that Pri 1 spot", to be able to show their friends their picture taken with that MP or to tell their family and friends - any problem let me know, I'll talk to the MP etc

Residents in Bukit Gombak have offered accounts of an alleged clash between PAP and PSP during a 4 January walkabout.

One resident told local media TNP that PAP volunteers advised him to keep his door closed to PSP members, describing the behaviour as childish.

Meanwhile, over 30 others said they interacted with PSP volunteers, but none recalled seeing PAP volunteers.

SINGAPORE: Senior Minister of State Low Yen Ling from the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) recently clashed with the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) over an alleged harassment incident during a walkabout in Bukit Gombak, Choa Chu Kang GRC. Some residents have since spoken out about the issue.

The incident is believed to have occurred on 4 January at Block 386, Goodview Gardens, in Bukit Gombak.

A resident of Block 386 claimed that PAP volunteers knocked on his door that day and advised him to keep it closed.

Speaking to The New Paper, the resident said, “Two women from the PAP knocked on my door and told me the opposition party was here to ‘disturb’.”

“They told me to ignore knocks from PSP members and keep my door closed.”

“It’s my first time seeing this type of behaviour and I find it childish,” he shared with the media outlet.

A senior citizen living on the 22nd storey stated that PSP volunteers visited her flat. However, she was unaware of what transpired in the lift until she saw a video of the incident circulating online.

She added that the behaviour of the two men in the video, as well as the online m&d-slinging, was boh liao (meaningless).

Separately, TNP reported that more than 30 residents said they had chatted with PSP volunteers, who visited their flats and distributed flyers on 4 January. However, none of them recalled seeing PAP volunteers.

One resident on the 12th storey insisted that PAP volunteers had visited every household on his floor, and he reported no sign of PSP members.

“I saw PAP members knocking on every door on my floor, and I even had a chat with Ms Low Yen Ling,” he said. “There was no sight of anyone from PSP, though.”

Netizens Criticise Alleged Harassment as “Shameful” and “Childish,” Call for Professionalism

Netizens on TNP’s Facebook post criticised the alleged behaviour of the party volunteers as “shameful,” “unprofessional,” and “childish,” with many expressing disapproval over claims that volunteers told residents PSP was there to “disturb.”

Some questioned why PAP didn’t file a police report if PSP truly manhandled their volunteers, accusing the party of blocking or deleting critical comments.

Others emphasised the need for both parties to act professionally and focus on showcasing their policies rather than engaging in such actions, noting that such behaviour undermines democratic values.

SMS Low Accused PSP of “Twisting the Truth” Over Alleged Harassment in Bukit Gombak

Earlier, PSP member S Nallakaruppan and volunteer Stella Stan Lee had alleged harassment by purported PAP supporters during the walkabout, with Lee claiming she was followed and filmed at close range.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (8 January), Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, refuted allegations made by PSP members, accused the PSP of having “twisted the truth” and presenting an inaccurate account of the events.

Low, who is also Chua Chu Kang GRC MP and Chairperson of the Mayors’ Committee and Mayor of South West District, presented her version of events from Bukit Gombak that day.

Low alleged that during a walkabout at Goodview Gardens, a PSP member physically and verbally harassed a male PAP volunteer, slapping him twice and using derogatory terms.

Another PAP volunteer was reportedly taunted by the same PSP member, who forcibly took a selfie and video with him. According to Low, female PAP volunteers also claimed PSP members recorded their movements, prompting them to do the same.

Later that afternoon, PSP members allegedly shouted, taunted, and took photographs of PAP volunteers near a sheltered walkway.

Low stated that while the PAP team initially considered filing a police report, they decided against it, hoping the PSP would refrain from such actions in the future.

However, she noted that PSP has instead made allegations and filed a report, and she welcomes a full police investigation to uncover the truth.

Low’s Allegations Contradicted by PSP’s Video Evidence

However, Low did not share any photos or videos in her Facebook post to substantiate her allegations of harassment. Additionally, her claims are inconsistent with the events depicted in the videos shared by the PSP.

Accordibng to PSP’s S Nallakaruppan, he described incidents where individuals, allegedly PAP supporters, followed his team closely, took photographs, and behaved unprofessionally, claiming the area as “their territory.”

Despite requests from PSP to conduct outreach at separate blocks, these individuals continued distributing flyers to residents approached by PSP.

He further alleged that they followed PSP members to the car park and possibly photographed their vehicles, warning that such actions could constitute harassment and be reported to the police.

While Stella Stan Lee who participated in the walkabout posted a photograph showing an individual filming her at close range, stating, “No woman would feel safe with any man filming her in such tight proximity.”

She has also since filed a police report on 5 January against the actions of the individuals.

Footage and photos taken on that day shows phones shoved in PSP volunteers’ faces as individuals persistently followed them, despite being asked to stop.

As Singapore gears up for its next General Election, scheduled to be held by 23 November 2025, the intensified competition for voter support in Bukit Gombak may be rooted in the closely contested results of the previous election.

In that race, the PAP narrowly edged out the PSP in Chua Chu Kang GRC, winning 58.64% of the vote against PSP’s 41.36%.
