ROAMING buffaloes have been causing accidents and the loss of lives in Perak, reported Tamil Nesan. The daily quoted Buntong Community and Welfare Association chief S. Selvaraju as saying that many livestock owners in the state did not bother to keep their animals fenced in.
He said many animals slept on the roads, particularly along the Jalan Ipoh-Lumut stretch, at night. He claimed that the number of road accidents involving buffaloes in Perak had increased and that the situation had not improved despite the Ipoh Municipal Council rounding up the animals.
Selvaraju claimed that some buffalo owners even sought the help of public organisations and political leaders in getting their fines waived. He said other areas in Perak like Simpang Pulai, Tanjung Tualang and Kampar had also reported road accidents involving buffaloes. Selvaraju urged the state government to set aside land for livestock owners to rear their animals.
