Brunei is set to permit the stoning and whipping to death of LGBT+ people under a series of reforms to its penal code that are attracting international condemnation.

New laws due to come into effect next Wednesday will see the tiny kingdom become the first nation in southeast Asia to impose the death penalty for those found engaging in same-sex intercourse.

Homosexuality was already illegal and carried a long jail sentence in Brunei. However, the country is in the process of introducing a Sharia Law-style system for criminal punishment.

Human rights groups have denounced the move, including Amnesty International, which described the new punishments as “heinous” and “inhumane”.

It said same-sex relations would become a capital offence that could be carried out by whipping or stoning.

Amnesty warned other new laws would permit amputation as a punishment for robbery or theft – a sentence that would also be carried out on children.

“Some of the potential ‘offences’ should not even be deemed crimes at all, including consensual sex between adults of the same gender,” said Rachel Chhoa-Howard, a Brunei researcher for the organisation.

“Brunei must immediately halt its plans to implement these vicious punishments, and revise its penal code in compliance with its human rights obligations.

“The international community must urgently condemn Brunei’s move to put these cruel penalties into practice.”

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, who rules Brunei by absolute monarchy, first introduced measures under the Sharia Penal Code in 2014, imposing fines or jail terms for offences such as pregnancy out of wedlock or failing to pray on Fridays.

However, laws targeting LGBT+ people were shelved following international protests, including a boycott of the Sultan’s exclusive Beverly Hills Hotel in California.

But it appears the monarch will now implement the legislation, which he has in the past said should be regarded as “special guidance” from god.

Around two thirds of the oil-rich nation’s 417,000 inhabitants are Muslim, while it is also home to significant Christian and Buddhist communities.

There has been no vocal opposition to the new rules in Brunei, where public criticism of the Sultan and his policies are extremely rare.

The country has long been known for conservative policies such as banning the sale of alcohol and it already issues caning as a punishment under secular laws for several crimes including immigration offences.

Got chinese blood. thats why

In 1402, after the death of Sultan Muhammad Shah ( or known before converting to Islam, Awang Alak Betatar), his son Abdul Majid Hasan ascended the throne. Ong Sum Ping and Pengiran Temenggong became regents. Bruneian history has seldom treated Hasan as the second Sultan. In 1406, after the death of Sultan Majid Hasan, there existed a two-year power vacuum. During this two years, Bruneian nobles were locked in a power struggle; in the end, with the clever maneuvering of Ong Sum Ping, Sultan Ahmad came out victorious and Pengiran Temenggong's faction lost. Ahmad thus became the second Sultan in Bruneian official History. Sultan Ahmad was married to a sister of Ong Sum Ping. To further cement his influence on the new sultan, Ong Sum Ping advised the sultan that a visit to China, a regional Asian power at that time was good

Brilliant sultan. Adultery and gay sex is completely unnatural.

Sultan should build a gas chamber and send these people back to their maker.

If the Chinese has low IQ - so be it. Likewise to all low IQ countries - in denial will only cause sufferings just like in Europe. The great experiment of integrating low IQ Blacks and High IQ Whites ended catastrophically as proven.

I find myself liking Sharia law more and more as the years go by.

On weekends, miri and labuan are filled to the brim with brunei shoppers and weekenders. Nightclubs, fance clubs, pubs all full.
The funny thing is, when brunei was still under british rule and the current sultan father was in charge, it was the reverse. Drinks were cheap and plentiful in brunei.

Taiwan is cracking down on drunk driving.
TAIPEI: Taiwan plans to ramp up punishments for those who cause a fatal accident while drunk driving, including the death penalty for the most egregious cases, sparking an outcry from abolition and rights groups.
The cabinet on Thursday approved a draft amendment to the Criminal Code that would make death by drunk driving an indictable murder offence, potentially punishable by death if the deed is deemed “intentional”, officials said.
The proposal needs parliamentary approval but comes after a spate of high profile deaths that have generated widespread outrage.
Currently the maximum sentence in Taiwan for causing a death while drunk behind the wheel is 10 years.

The new proposal would increase jail sentences for repeat offenders who commit a new offence within five years of their first conviction.
They face up to a life sentence for causing a death and 12 years for grave injuries.
“Cases of drunk driving leading to death are rampant … drink drivers recklessly caused accidents that took lives and destroyed families to result in irreparable regret,” the Justice Ministry said in a statement.
In one notorious case in January, a 40-year-old man crashed his van into a taxi while driving intoxicated, killing three people and injuring three others including himself.
Very few countries employ the death penalty for drunk driving cases.
China has previously vowed to execute those who have killed behind the wheel and some states in the United States retain capital punishment for such cases.
In 2014 a Texas man was indicted on “capital murder” after he ploughed his car into a crowd killing four people.
But in the end prosecutors did not seek the death penalty and he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Several rights groups on Thursday, including the Taiwan Association for Human Rights, issued a joint statement criticising the proposed amendment and calling for “rational legislation for irrational drunk driving”.
“There is a lack of evidence and research that seeking grave penalties and legislation would truly prevent drunk driving,” the statement said.
Taiwan resumed capital punishment in 2010 after a five-year hiatus, despite ongoing calls from local and international rights groups for its abolition.

Various surveys over the years have shown support from the public for keeping the death penalty.
Taiwan executed a man who murdered his ex-wife and their daughter last September, the first execution carried out under President Tsai Ing-wen’s government that took office in 2016.
