Today, DPM Heng Swee Keat announced in Parliament that the public sector is taking the lead in the SGUnited Jobs Initiative to help workers affected by the COVID-19 situation.

Very encouraged that this process has already started. Since Monday, Jetstar Asia crew members have been working with the Singapore Food Agency as Safe Distancing Ambassadors at coffee shops across Singapore. We are also working closely with NTUC’s e2i and unions to help affected workers.

About 10,000 public sector jobs in areas such as social services, early childhood education and ICT, as well as a range of short-term, temporary jobs will be created over the next year.

Situation is really bad for those in the aviation sector. I was chatting with one of my reservist mates who is a pilot Captain in SQ. He told me under normal circumstance add in all the allowances and incentives he could get about 200-240k a year, now with the grounding and no pay leave he's down to 80k annual. Lucky he's not those financially stretched guys.

I can only imagine the financial pain must be much worse for the other lower paying jobs like attendants and ground staff.
