Brigitte Bardot wants to run for France's top post to defend animal rights

The 'And God Created Woman' star has been asked by the Ecology Alliance Party to run for the president's post in the 2012 elections, the Daily Express reported online. The party champions animal rights and campaigns against the ritual slaughter of livestock while Bardot is the most vocal celebrity on the issue. The 76-year-old says she is considering hitting the campaign trail after she was treated like an "imbecile " by President Nicolas Sarkozy. "Someone's voice is needed to defend animals as neither the Right nor the Left give a damn!" "Sarkozy took me for an imbecile by making promises he didn't keep."

The Ecology Alliance Party's chairman Antoine Waechter said, "We think she is the best person to represent us for the presidency." " If she accepts, a final decision will be taken next year." Bardot is an outspoken champion of animal rights in the country and often invites controversy with her racist remarks. Previously, in an interview with France magazine, she said that politics disgusted her. "I am greatly misunderstood by politically-correct idiots," she said. In 2008, she branded US presidential candidate Sarah Palin "a disgrace to women"
