Bribe squad out to entice cops

SHAH ALAM: Police will be fielding plainclothes personnel to test on-duty policemen by offering them bribes.

This is one of several latest moves to fight corruption in the force, said Senior Asst Comm Datuk Hashim Abd Jalil, deputy chief (disciplinary) of the Inspector-General of Police’s Integrity Secretariat.

“We will conduct such integrity tests by putting our plainclothes men out there to offer bribes to those on duty.

“We need to act now before it gets worse,” he said at a press conference on the sidelines of an anti-graft seminar.

SAC Hashim said the force would also be working with Bank Negara to ensure policemen and their family members were not debt-ridden.

He said personnel burdened by debts were more likely to ask for as well as accept bribes.

“Corruption is a cancerous thing in the force and we are trying our best to get to the core of the problem,” he said.

SAC Hashim said that in a bid to clean up the force, a department called the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) was formed.

“We are aware that some of our policemen take bribes. JIPS was established to make sure that with each passing year, the number of corrupt policemen decreases,” he said.

According to SAC Hashim, district police chiefs would also be held accountable for the performance of their men in the integrity tests.

“If their men do badly, they will have to answer for it,” he said.

Also, every district chief would have to achieve at least three cases where their men refused to accept bribes.

“So far, we haven’t reached our target.

“We still have a long way to go,” he added.
