New opposition candidate expected in Potong Pasir

SINGAPORE: It is likely that Potong Pasir Member of Parliament Chiam See Tong will contest in a Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the next General Election, which is due by February 2012.

According to Singapore People's Party (SPP) chairman Sin Kek Tong, "someone new" will be fielded to defend the Potong Pasir ward - a constituency that Mr Chiam has represented since 1984.

Mr Sin did not give any details on the potential candidate or which GRC Mr Chiam plans to contest.

On Sunday, People's Action Party secretary-general Lee Hsien Loong said at the party's annual convention that "had to be some change with the way we treated Potong Pasir".

He was referring to the 2006 election when Mr Chiam had urged voters to vote for him, and get "two MPs for the price of one".

Since he is in such poor health, he should step down immediately to pave the way for a by-election as any good opposition would. This is especially so when:

i. he was the one who popularised the by-election strategy;
ii.the ruling party has undermined the opposition with a GRC system which circumvents by-elections;
iii. PP would have disqualified as an SMC by the coming election as the number of residents have fallen below the minimum threshold; and
iv. GE can be called anytime soon.

If PAP's Sitoh Yih Pin still can't win the next election in Potong Pasir, without Mr Chiam contesting... I guess he should quit politics altogether!

I agree with phouse3 that chiam should step down. He should retire gracefully and keep his legacy intact.
Running in a GRC may not be the best thing for him. In fact, I think it could be a liability for his GRC mates. I'm sure the PAP would use his health issues as ammo against his team.

So why not give the SPP “new” guy a dry run in contesting PP in the form of a by-election?

Any Singaporean that votes for the PAP in the next election is not a Singaporean at heart.

We have seen how the PAP have increased their salaries, put in new laws to strengthen themselves and allow a ridiculous number of foreign workers in to the huge and long-term detriment of Singaporeans.

We will hang Mahbok Tan's $10 BILLION+ ($2 billion a year X 10 years) loss on his head along with his election losses and his $400,000 expenditure on renaming MArina Bay, Marina Bay in the coming elections.

We will also hang his head in shame on how he can still be in parliament after being such a loser in elections except for the lsat election and in running the HDB. Mahbok Tan and his days in parliament are numbered.

Let's see how this guy and a lot of the other PAP MP survive after they are ousted from parliament. The PAP talks so much about their paying millions of dollars to their ministers but these ministers don't even deserve a minor percentage of waht they are earning if they were to try and work an honest living in the real world.

Let's kick them out and rely on the civil service and the people to govern the country and not a bunch of ridiculously paid lip-servers.
