Taiwan voters rebuff China and give ruling party third presidential term​

TAIPEI - Taiwanese voters swept the ruling Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) presidential candidate Lai Ching-te into power on Saturday (Jan 13) in an explicit rejection of China's warnings not to vote for him in an election Beijing framed as a choice between war and peace.

Current Vice President Lai's DPP, which champions Taiwan's separate identity and rejects China's territorial claims, was seeking a third term, unprecedented under Taiwan's current electoral system.

Lai was facing two opponents for the presidency - Hou Yu-ih of Taiwan's largest opposition party the Kuomintang (KMT) and former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je of the small Taiwan People's Party, only founded in 2019. Both conceded defeat.

Lai was due to speak to reporters at 8.30 p.m. (1230 GMT) in Taipei.

In the run-up to the election, China denounced Lai as a dangerous separatist, saying that any moves towards Taiwan's formal independence meant war, and rebuffed Lai's calls for talks.

Lai says he is committed to preserving peace and the status quo across the Taiwan Strait and boosting the island's defences.

In pragmatic terms, should a military CCP invasion into Taiwan occur, it would be costly to the CCP, as by the vote, it shows MANY are willing & prepared to sacrifice their own lives for innocent Taiwanese kids & generations to come. With infrastructure destroyed, it will be costly for the CCP to rebuild, more so when it has 1.4 Billion HUNGRY citizens in China to take care off...not to mention INTERNATIONAL outcries at such an invasion & sanctions to come..

CCP Military Generals NEED to prove their worth, their salaries, their privileges, their side ( often hidden & dishonest) income, & thus they will loudly & proudly proclaim they have the ability to wipe Taiwan off the face of Earth's map, the way previous CCP societal leaders even a district chief would LIE to Mao during the horrific & disastrous 'Great Leap Forward' program by Mao, to ensure their own position & privileges, but at the expense of the very ones that the TRUE CCP was created & meant to protect - the MASSES, & saw sadly, MILLIONS of Chinese starved & died by impossible imposed economic attainment...

Rather than war, perhaps republic Rome's example of conquest can be followed, more so when in recent days, both USA & China had agreed upon co-operation than conflict.
