The deadly coronavirus is spreading out of control in Hong Kong with a record 100 new cases confirmed, the finance hub's leader said Sunday as she tightened social distancing measures to tackle the sudden surge in infections.

The finance hub was one of the first places to be struck by the virus when it emerged from central China.

But the city had impressive success in tackling the disease, all but ending local transmissions by late June.

However, in the last two weeks, infections have spiked once more and doctors fear the new outbreak is now spreading undetected in the densely packed territory of 7.5 million people.

On Sunday chief executive Carrie Lam said more than 500 infections had been confirmed in the last fortnight alone, nearly a third since the outbreak began.

On Sunday 108 new infections were recorded by health authorities, a daily high for the finance hub, bringing the total to 1,886 cases.

"I think the situation is really critical and there is no sign the situation is being brought under control," Lam told reporters.

Lam announced new social distancing measures last week, shuttering many businesses including bars, gyms and nightclubs, and ordering everyone to wear masks on public transport.

Restaurants were ordered to only offer takeout services in the evenings.

On Sunday Lam announced even more regulations, including plans to make it compulsory to wear masks inside any public indoor venue -- and a new order for non-essential civil servants to work for home.

As hospital wards fill, officials are also scrambling to build a further 2,000 isolation rooms on barren land near the city's Disneyland resort to monitor and treat those who test positive, she added.

Hong Kong was already mired in recession when the pandemic hit thanks to the US-China trade war and months of political unrest last year.

The new partial lockdown has compounded the economic misery.

On Sunday, Lam called for landlords to look at lowering rents in the notoriously expensive city where inequality is rampant.

She said further social distancing measures would be rolled out if the daily infection rate did not ease in coming days.

However, she said she was keen to avoid ordering people to remain at home.

"We can't just make a simple and extreme move to cut everything at once," Lam said.

Authorities say testing will be ramped up, targeting high-risk populations such as taxi drivers and restaurant workers after clusters were found within their ranks.

Some of the new infections have swept through elderly care homes, a major cause of concern given how deadly the coronavirus is to older people.

So far, 12 people have died after contracting the virus in Hong Kong -- four in the last fortnight.

Lam said officials would try to strike a balance between protecting health and keeping the economy partially afloat.

"It's hard to tell what kind of measures we will need to roll out... many places have ordered people to stay home," she said.

"We haven't adopted that in the last six months because we wanted to maintain a normal life for everyone."

I keep telling the world leaders that the only way to beat this virus is to face it head on rather than cowering in the shadows.

Lockdowns are NOT going to defeat the virus because it is already endemic. Locking down slows the rate of infection but it also causes problems that are far worse than the virus itself.

Some believe that if lockdowns can buy sufficient time a vaccine will be developed which could save the day. However even if a vaccine does arrive it won't make much difference to the death toll because the most vulnerable group ie the elderly do not respond to vaccines because their immune systems are already weak.

In a typical flu season vaccines can be 70% effective in the young but only 20% effective for those over 65. There is no evidence to believe that a coronavirus vaccine would be any different but I guess there is nothing wrong with optimism as long as it is tapered with realism and the acceptance that vaccines will not be a magic bullet.

Vaccines could also be a long way off and if countries keep shutting down their economies every time there is an outbreak the collapse of economies will cause far more deaths than Covid-19.

The Swedish response is the way to go. There will be more casualties but everyone has to realise that this is a war not a picnic. There are bound to be casualties. We have to accept this fact and work towards keeping the numbers as low as possible.

If we respond to the threats by barricading ourselves behind walls and closed doors the enemy will simply wait beyond our doorsteps and watch us choke ourselves to death without having to do a thing.

The coronavirus is NOT deadly.. If it is deadly, the whole street will be filled with dead bodies.. Get real.. The media is only playing with people's mind to think of it as deadly.

Lol,didn't some idiots say not long ago that Hong Kong was immune? Or possessed some great policies or something.

Well it's like how peanuts are fine for most of us but deadly for 1 percent of the population.

It's deadly for less than 0.4% of the population and the vast majority of those are already half dead in the first place.

The Hongkies should send a team to SG to learn from our Covid-19 task force.

We have close to 50,000 cases with several hundreds infections daily but we are still steady and not 'OUT OF CONTROL'.

Yes and peanuts don't spread themselves either, whereas covid can spread themselves to hundreds and thousands and tens of thousands whereby making those at risk 2% even more high risk.

This virus is made in the lab.. in the beginning, it might be dangerous.. that is a big MIGHT.. Let's say it is super dangerous in the beginning.. The virus will reproduce itself by multiplying itself.. It mean one virus become a lot of virus using the host cell as a tool for its multiplication. As the virus multiply itself, it will becomes less lethal a little bit. (This is what i believe)What if the virus has done this a few million times, it will become a normal harmless virus. ( become the original unedited form of the virus)

Those death due to this virus is, to me, bullshit. I highly think that those old people who are dead is not because of the virus, it is because of the hospital environment that they are subject to.
Those cause them the stress and lead them to death. The stress and fear worsen their already existing chronic condition. respirator and all that stuffs sticking on to them and the onslaught of the toxic medication to them.

Imagine waking up and suddenly seeing a tube down your throat.only 20% survive the ordeal

Ah Nehs are dropping like flies with over 1.1 million cases and 27K + deaths. Should call it a holocaust.

our cases more than 100 but still "not out of control" and "no apology" needed

There are 1.3 BILLION of them the figures are minuscule as a proportion of the population.

To put it in numbers the virus has killed but 0.0021% of the population.

In comparison road accidents kill 150,000 people every single year.
