Heckling has no place in politics

THE conduct of the heckler who wanted to be known as "Mr Hum" was unacceptable when he tried to provoke Minister and MP Lim Hwee Hua ("Lim Hwee Hua waylaid by heckler"; Thursday).

I believe most Singaporeans would not tolerate such atrocious behaviour. Having said this, I urge the police to take firm action against anyone who heckles any political candidate, whether from the People's Action Party or the opposition, on the campaign trail.

I understand that in liberal London Hyde Park, the ground rule is that heckler can be charge with affray and public order offences. In China hecklers in Tian Ah Men may be hauled and locked up for many years!
