Why must Singapore implement GST?

GST was introduced as part of a larger tax restructuring exercise, to enable Singapore to shift its reliance from direct taxes to indirect taxes. GST has also enabled Singapore to sustain a lower income tax rate. Being a tax on consumption, and not income, GST inherently encourages savings and investments.

u r taxed 4 eating rice n drinking water ...

u r encouraged 2 save by eating less rice n drinking less water ...

Let me see....if you earn let's say $1,200 per month, naturally you don't have to pay income tax right? But now, becos of GST, you have to pay tax!

Is this an 'oversight'? Happens once in 50 years? Help Ass Loong to FIX opposition? Add more spur to peasants' hides?

So good then why not raise GST to 25% and lower corporate tax to zero?

Is the GST now at 7%?

Speaking from my observation, I don't think this is a high GST level, as compared to many countries...

Other countries can be as high as 20% for VAT alone...

Anyways, SGP do have one of the lowest income tax in the world.

But the problem is not on the GST...

The problem lies on how the Government is taking care of it's people... in SGP, virtually everyone is just a serf for the Imperial Dynasty, unless you can rub shoulder with the Emperor.

Just some views...

hi there

1. aiyoh! there is even gst on the phone call made to some charities in sinkieland too.
2. oh! yes helping peasants to be sheep.

Lower TAX and increase GST mean taxing poor and helping rich. All people will have to pay TAX and rich people will be paying smaller tax.
Stupid ideas from ministers.

Thereafter still there is a short-fall of tax .
They will refuse to lower corporate tax and tweak upwards
of consumption tax yet again .

OUr budget has never included proceeds from land sales. This figure is in the billions of dollars and is never reported to the public. If you include this figure the usual budget surplus is actually a lot more and if there is a deficit, it may not actually be a deficit.

And if you include profits from GLCs and revenue streams going into companies partly owned by Temasek and GIC, then the garment's revenue is actually ridiculously higher than what is actually reported.
