Did the earliest inhabitants of Singapore, who came from different lands but settled here to build this great country, have to do NS?
Of course not, because the circumstances were different.
Does that make their contributions any less significant? By that same logic, doing NS is not the only way one can contribute to the country.
The policies of the Government are well thought out and will continue to attract foreigners to this beautiful country.

The issue is not about NS. It is about how Singaporeans have been cheated into serving NS (CSJ was right in his book title: A Nation Cheated). If any bloody foreigner can just come in, live here, work here and enjoy almost the same benefits as a citizen, why are male citizens obligated to do NS and reservist duties? Why can't they also choose to contribute in other ways (like paying taxes as the foreigners like to keep harping on)?

For goodness sake, can all the dimwits please stop comparing now and the time when Singapore was a British colony? At that time, Singapore was never marketed as a nation and thus, there was no such notion as duty to country. I don't know about others but I am angry that I am called upon to defend this so-called country (risking my life during peacetime and wartime) and when I am old and/or vulnerable, the country would simply forsake me and gladly replace me with a foreigner who thinks paying taxes entitles him/her to equal privileges as me. No country for old men except one exceptional one.

I think its pretty logical. Since you already said that the Matland guy had said he didn't take up citizenship which means the immigration board had already asked if he wants to take up citizenship and after he refused, they don't think he will ever convert and didnt want to waste time with him
