WHILE the number of elderly who are abused remains small, what is worrying is that about two-thirds of the abusers are their own children.
Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Vivian Balakrishnan, who revealed this at a National Family Violence Networking Symposium on Wednesday morning, said some children who take their anger out on their parents do not do so out of malice, but because they cannot cope with caring for an old person.
Hence, children must be given the right information and skills to care for their elderly parents.
An average of 178 elderly abuse case are reported annually, a number which social workers say is the tip of the iceberg.
To better protect victims of family violence, a manual on the Integrated Management of Family Violence Cases in Singapore has been revised to ensure better coordination across agencies and to create a more robust system that will offer timely protection and effective intervention for families at risk.
The manual, first produced in 1999 and last reviewed in 2003, spells out the protocols of agencies that are involved in the management of family violence cases.
