KOTA KINABALU: Police rescued a 14-year-old boy held hostage by a machete-wielding man in a hut for more than eight hours at Kampung Mananam in Tongod in the Kina_batangan area. A police team led by Insp Mohd Helmy Hussian stormed the hut after negotiations failed about 9am on Saturday.
Police grabbed the boy when the 50-year-old man lit a cooking gas cylinder. The man, believed to be a foreigner, was shot in the legs when he tried to attack police with the machete during the rescue. During the negotiations, the man had demanded a pistol or a rifle from the police for the release of the boy whom he took hostage at about 1am.
Kinabatangan district police chief Jaini Abdul Kadir said yesterday that the boy – who suffered minor cuts on his neck and bruises on his wrists from being tied up – and the man were sent to the district hospital for treatment. The man was part of a work party hired to build a hut at Kampung Mananam. It was learnt that he grabbed the boy after he was accused of stealing money by a colleague who was the boy’s brother.
