The injured six-year-old Hong Kong boy was treated for minor injuries at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.
A six-year-old Hong Kong boy was saved by his father with the help of a passer-by when he was grabbed around the neck by a man holding a screwdriver in the early hours of this morning.
The boy and his father suffered minor injuries in the incident on Ma Tau Wai Road shortly after midnight, according to police.
“The boy’s father and a [male] passer-by subdued the man before officers arrived,” a police source said.
According to police, initial investigation showed the suspect, 40, had no history of mental illness and did not know the boy.
“So far, there is no indication to suggest he was under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol,” the source said.
“We suspect the man has a psychiatric problem. Doctors will test his mental state in hospital.”
The boy and his father, 34, were treated for minor injuries at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei.
According to police, the incident happened at about 12.30am when the man was first found wielding the screwdriver on board a moving double-decker bus on To Kwa Wan Road.
The bus pulled over near the junction with Sheung Heung Road after its driver, 46, received a complaint from a passenger and called police.
The man carrying the screwdriver got off the bus and left before officers arrived.
As officers were searching for the man in the area, he grabbed the boy in Ma Tau Wai Road, about 400 metres away from where the bus stopped.
According to police, the suspect was “emotionally unstable” at the time of the incident. He was also taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for examination.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and failing to produce an identification document. His identity was later established.
At lunchtime, he was being held in the hospital’s custodial ward and had not been charged.
Detectives from Kowloon City police district are investigating.
Last Friday, a man aged around 30 followed a nine-year-old boy into a lift in Kwun Tong and covered the youngster’s mouth with his hand.
The man fled the building in Mut Wah Street at about 9.45am when the boy put up a struggle and bit his hand. The boy, who was not hurt, ran into a private tutorial centre to seek help and a staff member called police. Officers combed the area but found no one.
The man, described as 1.7 metres tall, was wearing an orange shirt, blue jeans, and orange and white sports shoes. Police are treating the case as loitering.
