THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is enhancing its career schemes for officers and regulars, which will see the retirement age of officers raised to 50, in a move to enhance their career and retain talent.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean on Thursday morning also announced expanded roles and responsibilities for warrant officers and the creation of a new military domain expert scheme for regulars such as engineers to specialise.

Mr Teo said the changes will 'keep SAF forceful and dynamic'.

Briefing the media on the new and enhanced SAF career schemes, Mr Teo said raising the officers' retirement age from the current early to mid-40s will ensure their leadership abilities and experience are retained within the officers corp.

The move will also provide SAF officers with more time to train and acquire necessary knowledge and expertise 'to operate new capabilities to function effectively in the Third Generation SAF,' he added.

For warrant officers (WO), their roles and responsibilities as combat trainers will be expanded and a third WO rank will be introduced.

'They are repositories of values, skills and knowledge,' said Mr Teo, on the need to enhance the WO scheme.

To allow regulars and domain officers to develop deep expertise and specialisation, a new Military Domain Expert Scheme (MDES) will be created, with a higher retirement age at 60.

This will allow regulars in engineering and nursing areas, for examples, to be deployed in operational roles.

'The more proficient they are, the more the organisation gains from them,' said Mr Teo of the MDES scheme.
