A Norwegian Boeing 787 passenger plane took off from Rome on the 10th, and the engine parts fell off. The cobblestone-sized parts fragments fell from the sky, smashing the roof of the local vehicles and houses near Fiumicino Airport, and the affected people shouted as follows. "Bullet rain."
Take the self-funded Umichino Mayor Montino Facebook.
Most of these fragments are as long as 10 to 20 cm. (taken from the self-funded Umichino Mayor Montino Facebook)

After the jetliner from Rome to Los Angeles took off, most of the engine debris fell straight down and landed at a residential building near Fiumicino Airport. Local residents were so scared that they couldn’t help but scream and look for places to cover. .

An eyewitness told the Italian "Im Messaggero": "They (shards) are like bullets, my shirts are on fire."

Another name said: "It looked like a hail, but it was a sunny day. I went to the balcony and saw that there was a steel storm. I screamed and ran into the house."

Municipal sources pointed out that 25 cars and 12 houses were derogated. A 54-year-old man was hit by a piece of debris, but the injury was not serious. The man said that he felt that he was "very lucky to survive."

Some of the pieces were like vehicles that were parked on the road in the rain, and they smashed the windows.

Residents with a lingering heart walked down the street and picked up the pieces that had fallen from the sky, and found that the fragments were mostly 10 to 20 cm long.

Fiumicino Mayor Esterino Montino also confirmed this on Facebook, saying that local and central police officers, as well as civil defense units, have been sent to the site for disaster investigation.

A Norwegian aviation spokesperson told Euronews that the flight from Rome to Los Angeles, "because of one of the engines' technical failures", must be returned to Fiumicino Airport. She also mentioned that the passenger plane has landed safely.

Just minutes after departing from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport Saturday, Norwegian Flight 7115 to Los Angeles started raining engine parts on a suburb near the Italian capital.
According to Italian media reports, the debris came from the plane’s left engine and gave one pedestrian minor burns in Isola Sacra, a neighborhood near Rome’s airport in Fiumicino. The incident also damaged houses and cars in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the glowing pieces of metal were like bullets falling from the sky, others said it was a stroke of good luck that there were not more injuries or worse property damage.

In a statement, Norwegian confirmed that Flight 7115, which was carrying 298 passengers and 12 crew, returned to the airport and landed safely shortly after takeoff. No one onboard was injured and Italian authorities are investigating what happened.

The incident comes amid turbulence at Norwegian, Boeing (which manufactured the airframe) and Rolls Royce (which produced the engine).

In July, Norwegian’s CEO abruptly stepped down from his post as the company shifted its strategy to focus on its most profitable routes. The airline has also been caught up in Boeing’s recent struggles as the 737 MAX forms a crucial segment of the airline’s fleet.

Meanwhile, Rolls Royce’s Trent 1000 engines, which power many of Norwegian’s 787s, including the aircraft that operated Flight 7115, have been suffering from reliability issues. The engines have needed to undergo early maintenance, and some airlines even had to temporarily ground their 787 fleets.

Boeing 787 Engine Part Smashes Car Window In Italy

Today, Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera is reporting an incident involving a Norwegian Boeing 787. The aircraft took off from Rome’s Fiumicino airport bound for Los Angeles as flight DY7115. Shortly after take-off, the aircraft suffered a “motor failure” and had to circle back to land again at Fiumicino. The most shocking part was that falling debris from the incident caused damage to the roofs of cars and houses in the area of Isola Sacra. There was even a report of someone becoming slightly burned.

The flight, with 298 passengers on board, could have caused more damage and serious injuries. According to the Italian press, the falling debris was close to a town center as well as the crowded beaches of the Roman coast.
Event details
On this pleasant summer day, residents of Isola Sacra experienced a “rain of incandescent metal fragments” falling to the ground from about 400 meters. The source of these metal fragments was the left engine of a Norwegian Airlines Boeing 787 that had just taken off from Leonardo Da Vinci airport headed for Los Angeles.

Alarms were triggered almost immediately according to sources. At 16:20, emergency vehicles appeared both at the runway as well as at Isola Sacra, where residents were surprised by the falling pieces of metal. The debris was found to have broken through the windows of parked cars and hit the tiles on top of buildings.

The fragments – about 5-10 centimeters in size – landed north of the road Ernesto Cabruna. Some residents collected them in the street and on the balconies of the houses. The mayor of Fiumicino, Esterino Montino made the following statement (translated from Italian):

“It is time to take action…this incident shows that the overflights on houses between Fregene and Isola Sacra are dangerous…We need to review the agreements that provide for the use of that track that was built when the areas around the airport were already inhabited and not vice versa”.

Italy’s ANSV, the National Agency for Flight Safety (L’Agenzia Nazionale per la Sicurezza del Volo) has opened an investigation on the incident. Inspectors were sent to examine the engine of the aircraft and also to the area where there was ground damage. Sources say that checks could now take place on engines of the same type. Furthermore, there will be checks on maintenance procedures.

The aircraft
According to Airfleets, LN-LND is a 5.5-year-old Boeing 787-8 leased from AerCap. Prior to this incident, the aircraft had made trips in and out of Rome from the American cities of Boston and Oakland.
Norwegian is just one of the airlines that has had issues with its 787s and their Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. 787s can have either the Trent 1000 or GEnx engines. In this case, we can confirm that this aircraft had the problematic Trent 1000s.

A Norwegian spokesperson said,
“Flight DY7115 from Rome Fiumicino (FCO) to Los Angeles (LAX) experienced a technical issue a few minutes after take-off this afternoon. The aircraft returned to the airport where it landed safely.
“All 298 passengers on board the flight are being taken care of in the terminal by our handling agent and the airport.
“The safety of our customers and crew is always our main priority. We are actively working with Aeroporti di Roma and the Italian authorities in the investigation. Because of this, we cannot comment any further on the specific aspects of this event.”

A spokesperson from Rolls-Royce said,
“We are aware of the event and are working with our customer to provide support and technical assistance.”

One person, 25 vehicles and 12 houses were hit by falling debris from a Boeing 787-8 as it made an emergency return to Rome's Fiumicino airport this weekend. The Norwegian flight DY-7115 was scheduled to fly from Rome to Los Angeles but encountered technical problems shortly after take-off.
After the plane had reached 3,000 feet, the pilots declared an emergency and returned to Rome for a safe landing, approximately 23 minutes after departure. There were 298 passengers on board, with no injuries reported.
Glowing engine parts fell from the sky
Italian media carried numerous eye-witness reports from local residents of the Isola Sacra neighborhood, many of whom talked of hundreds of glowing pieces of metal raining down from the sky. According to Corriere Della Sela, the incident could have been much worse: "Only a few more moments of flight and the incandescent splinters would have hit the center of town, or the crowded beaches of the Roman coast."

The plane in question was a 5.5-year-old Boeing 787-8 with the registration LN-LND. The parts are believed to have come from the left engine, a Rolls-Royce Trent 1000, a model that has been plagued with problems.

The extent of the technical problems suffered after take-off, what caused the parts to break away and just how close this incident was to a disaster is not yet known. Italy's aviation safety agency (ANSV) has launched an investigation. It's also expected that checks will be made on engines of a similar type, and on maintenance procedures at Rolls-Royce and Norwegian.
Mounting problems for Norwegian and Boeing
The incident is the latest in a string of problems for both Norwegian and Boeing. Norwegian's financial problems are well-documented. Earlier this year the airline announced a dramatic shift in its growth strategy to focus on profitability. That led to the cancellation of a wide range of long-haul flights on its winter 2019/20 timetable.
The airline has also suffered from the grounding of its fleet of 18 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, following the accidents in Ethiopia and Indonesia.
Norwegian has so far remained quiet on the incident. A spokeswoman told Euronews that the flight was forced to return to Rome “due to indications of a technical failure of one of the engines”. She added that the aircraft was able to land safely in Rome.
