flydubai is a strong Boeing supporter, exclusively flying the Boeing 737 family of aircraft. As such, it would pay for Boeing to keep the airline in their good books, as they would likely require more aircraft somewhere down the road. It seems like this isn’t the case, however, as reports suggest flydubai is considering changing allegiances to the Airbus A320 family.
About flydubai
flydubai is a low-cost airline owned by The Government of Dubai. While the Dubai government also owns Emirates Airlines, the two entities are not connected, with flydubai remaining outside of the Emirates Group. The airline was founded in March 2008, commencing operations in June 2009. flydubai currently has a fleet of 59 aircraft according to Airfleets.net, however, 13 of these are grounded Boeing 737 MAXs.

While the airline has only received 13 MAXs, it has a much greater outstanding order for the aircraft. In fact, flydubai placed an order for 175 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft which, according to Boeing, was worth $27 billion at the time. This makes the airline the second largest MAX customer.
Unhappy customers
According to Reuters, flydubai is less than pleased with how Boeing is handling the Boeing 737 MAX situation. The airline has claimed that Boeing should be doing more to converse with Boeing 737 MAX customers. Reuters also reports airline chairman, Sheikh Ahmed, said “more needed to be known about those fixes and the how long the plane grounding will last”.

It seems as though airlines are also beginning to follow Norwegian’s lead. Just days after the 737 MAX was grounded, Norwegian publicly demanded that Boeing pay the airline compensation. Now, flydubai is following in Norwegian’s footsteps. Mr Ahmed said “I have to ask [for compensation]. It is my right. I didn’t ground those 14 aircraft”
Is an Airbus order on the horizon?
With flydubai requiring aircraft in order to expand, it seems as though the airline is not keen on the current state of affairs. As things stand, flydubai is unsure when to expect that its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft will fly again.

As a result, the airline has had to ground up to 15 flights per day. This is something that no carrier would be pleased with. However, Mr Ahmed told reporters that the circumstances had allowed him to talk to Airbus. The Airbus A320 is the Boeing 737’s biggest rival.
As flydubai is one of Boeing’s largest 737 MAX customers, any change of order, whether partial or full, to its rivals would come as a blow. If the big customers are not prepared to take the aircraft, it could knock the confidence of some smaller carriers. We have already seen Air Samoa reject their Boeing 737 MAX delivery.

Emirates keeping its options open when it comes to Boeing 737 Max, CEO says
The grounding of 737 Max airplanes has cost Emirates' sister airline FlyDubai a "lot of profitability" and Airbus planes could now replace some Boeing orders, the Middle East airline's CEO and chairman said Monday.
Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum said Flydubai, a regional partner of Emirates, has had to stop using 40 aircraft due to the worldwide grounding of the 737 Max aircraft following two deadly crashes involving the model. The CEO added that with more than 100 Max 8 planes currently on order, he couldn't "sit and do nothing" and needed to look at options such as the Airbus A320.
"I have to look into a similar type of aircraft, let's say with the Airbus," Al Maktoum told CNBC's Dan Murphy at the Arabian Travel Market trade show in Dubai on Monday.
The Emirates and FlyDubai chief said he would "always demand that we be compensated," but would not yet take the step of officially canceling orders.
When asked how the Boeing crashes could affect the aerospace sector, Al Maktoum said he expected a lot of pressure on the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to be more candid about how it certifies Boeing aircraft.

In February, Airbus announced an end to its A380 superjumbo program, just 12 years after it first took to the skies.
The future of the world's largest commercial jet-liner had long been in doubt after it became clear that it was heavily reliant on big purchases from Emirates.
Al Maktoum said the rise of more efficient aircraft had obviously impacted upon the success of the A380, but Airbus' decision to end the program wouldn't negatively affect the airline's relationship with the planemaker.
"That will not change. At the end of the day, they are running a business," said Al Maktoum before adding that he expected to see the superjumbo in Emirates colors for at least another decade.
"We are today at 107 aircraft, it will go up to 125 before we see that some of the older aircraft come out of the fleet," he said.
Premium economy rollout
Meanwhile, Emirates has now confirmed a major rollout of premium economy seating will occur from some point in 2020. Al Maktoum hinted that market demand for this class of service between economy and business had pressured Emirates into a change of strategy.
"We have always to follow what the customer wants, not to offer what we like," he told CNBC.
Earlier Monday, Emirates said political tensions in the region and elsewhere had slowed the growth of the airline. "We've managed to come ahead with positive results, although it's not as good as it has been in the past," President Tim Clark told Reuters.
Emirates is due to report full-year results on May 9.

Dubai, Nairobi: Boeing Co.’s $600 billion-plus order book for its 737 Max began shaking after several big customers threatened to reconsider their purchases in the wake of the Ethiopian Airlines crash, the second deadly accident involving the plane since October.
VietJet Aviation JSC, which doubled its order to about $25 billion only last month, said it will decide on its future plans once the cause of the tragedy has been found. Kenya Airways Plc is reviewing proposals to buy the Max and could switch to Airbus SE’s rival A320. Russia’s Utair Aviation PJSC is seeking guarantees before taking delivery of the first of 30 planes.
That’s as Indonesia’s Lion Air firms up moves to drop a $22 billion order for the 737 in favour of the Airbus jet, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. Separately, a $5.9 billion order from a unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines hangs in the balance.
The 737, which first entered service in the late 1960s, is the aviation industry’s best-selling model and Boeing’s top earner. The re-engineered Max version has racked up more than 5,000 orders worth in excess of $600 billion, including planes that have already been delivered.
Boeing, whose shares have lost 11 per cent of their value this week, faces escalating financial risk after two disasters involving its newest narrow-body jet in the past five months. The stock inched up 0.5 per cent on Wednesday in New York after seeing its biggest two-day drop in almost a decade.
The deadly crash in Ethiopia comes just about five months after the October 29 crash of another Boeing 737 Max plane, operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air. The relationship between the carrier and Boeing soured after the manufacturer pointed to maintenance issues and human error at Lion as the underlying cause, even though the planes pilots had been battling a computerised system that took control following a sensor malfunction.
Sunday’s loss of an Ethiopian Airlines 737, in which 157 people died, bore similarities to the Asian tragedy, stoking concern that a feature meant to make the upgraded Max safer than earlier planes has actually made it harder to fly.
Boeing is in crisis as most of the world grounded the plane. On Wednesday, US regulators joined the global chorus by grounding the plane, citing evidence showing the Ethiopian Airlines flight may have experienced the same problem as the plane that went down five months ago off Indonesia.
“With extensive grounding of the 737 Max, near term news could get worse for Boeing before it improves,” Cai von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen & Co., said in a note. However, he added, because the company is readying an update to its flight-control software, “we don’t see meaningful long term risk.”
Indeed, the only real rival to Boeing is European plane maker Airbus, whose production line for the A320neo is full well into the next decade. Alaska Air Group Inc. said Wednesday it would take delivery of its first Max aircraft.
VietJet, Flyadeal
VietJet is monitoring the situation and will reach a decision on whether to go ahead with its purchase following “official conclusions” from global regulators and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, it said in a statement Wednesday.
Utair told RIA Novosti that it’s waiting for results of the Ethiopian crash probe before proceeding with the first delivery on an order for 30 737 Max jets. The company is seeking assurances from Boeing, it said.
Flyadeal, a unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines, said in December it would switch from Airbus and purchase up to 50 737 Max jets, subject to final terms being reached. The company says it’s waiting on the results of the investigation. “We’re closely monitoring the situation and are in constant contact with Boeing,” the company said in an email. “There are no conclusions to be drawn at this time.”
Lion Air was already looking at scrapping its Boeing deal after October’s crash, which killed 189, and the latest disaster has made co-founder Rusdi Kirana more determined to cancel the contract, according to the person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named as the plans are private.
Kenya Airways will consider switching to Airbus or could opt to take more an the older version of the 737 Boeing jet, which doesn’t feature the suspect system, Chairman Michael Joseph said in an email, without ruling out sticking with the Max. The company revived plans to expand its network last year with a proposal to buy as many as 10 of the planes worth about $1.2 billion.
Some 32 of those killed in the Ethiopian crash, which occurred six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa, were Kenyan citizens, the most for any single country.
“We will carefully follow the developments around the 737 Max,” Kenya Airways’ Joseph said. “No decision has been taken yet.” Sub-Saharan Africa’s third largest carrier is almost 50 per cent state-owned after a reorganisation in 2017.
Kenya Airways has about 40 aircraft including eight 787 wide-bodies and the same number of an older version of the 737, the 800. The Dreamliner fleet will likely expand to add long-haul services, Joseph said, requiring more smaller planes to feed them with customers. Those might include turboprops and Airbus A220 or Embraer SA E2 regional jets, as well as 737-sized models.

Garuda Indonesia to cancel Boeing 737 MAX order
Garuda Indonesia is set to cancel their order for 49 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft following the two fatal crashes that have killed 346 people in less than six months.
Although the airline acknowledges Boeing will have a fix for the aircraft, passenger confidence has been eradicated, potentially making it hard to operate flights with the aircraft.
The airline has sent a letter to Boeing requesting the cancellation, however is yet to receive a response. Placed in 2014, the order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft was valued at around $6 billion at list prices. Garuda has only taken delivery of one of these aircraft so far and is discussing whether to return the aircraft to Boeing or to keep it.

Garuda remains limited on their answer to new aircraft should their request for cancellation move forward, however has no plans to add Airbus narrowbodies. Current discussions within the airline involve converting their 737 MAX order to other Boeing aircraft, including small widebodies.
Lion Air has also expressed their thoughts on cancelling their order for the Boeing 737 MAX, however no further information has come from the airline.
The fallout of the two crashes has left a lot of airlines and passengers weary of the 737 MAX, and although Boeing argues it’s a safe aircraft, passengers with common or minimal knowledge on the topic will tie the aircraft type to the accidents.
It’s unknown how long this fallout will last, however it will go down as one of the most covered topics in modern aviation history.

Budget Saudi Arabian carrier, Flyadeal, has said a decision on its Boeing 737 MAX order is imminent after the airline has been assessing whether to continue with the order after two fatal crashes or switch to another aircraft.
With 30 737 MAX 8s on order with options for 20 more, the potential $5.9 billion dollar deal would only be a dent in Boeing’s 737 backlog if lost, however would further damage passenger confidence and investor backing following media outbreak.
In an interview with Reuters, the CEO of Flyadeal, Con Korfiatis, said the following:
“We’ve kept an open position in terms of which way we’ll go on the fleet given the situation with the MAX. At the moment we still don’t have a decision but it is imminent.”
Since the deal is only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), if Flyadeal cancels, there will be little to almost no penalties as no contractual agreements have been defined.
Following the cancellation, Flyadeal has said it would order the Airbus A320neo, which is the direct competitor to the 737 MAX. This wouldn’t alter Flyadeal’s plans too much as they already operate a fleet of current engine option A320s, allowing for simplified training.
Despite the fact that Boeing has tested new software for the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) that’s being held accountable, it takes a lot more to repair passenger confidence.

Dubai, Nairobi: Boeing Co.’s $600 billion-plus order book for its 737 Max began shaking after several big customers threatened to reconsider their purchases in the wake of the Ethiopian Airlines crash, the second deadly accident involving the plane since October.
VietJet Aviation JSC, which doubled its order to about $25 billion only last month, said it will decide on its future plans once the cause of the tragedy has been found. Kenya Airways Plc is reviewing proposals to buy the Max and could switch to Airbus SE’s rival A320. Russia’s Utair Aviation PJSC is seeking guarantees before taking delivery of the first of 30 planes.
That’s as Indonesia’s Lion Air firms up moves to drop a $22 billion order for the 737 in favour of the Airbus jet, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. Separately, a $5.9 billion order from a unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines hangs in the balance.
The 737, which first entered service in the late 1960s, is the aviation industry’s best-selling model and Boeing’s top earner. The re-engineered Max version has racked up more than 5,000 orders worth in excess of $600 billion, including planes that have already been delivered.
Boeing, whose shares have lost 11 per cent of their value this week, faces escalating financial risk after two disasters involving its newest narrow-body jet in the past five months. The stock inched up 0.5 per cent on Wednesday in New York after seeing its biggest two-day drop in almost a decade.
The deadly crash in Ethiopia comes just about five months after the October 29 crash of another Boeing 737 Max plane, operated by Indonesia’s Lion Air. The relationship between the carrier and Boeing soured after the manufacturer pointed to maintenance issues and human error at Lion as the underlying cause, even though the planes pilots had been battling a computerised system that took control following a sensor malfunction.
Sunday’s loss of an Ethiopian Airlines 737, in which 157 people died, bore similarities to the Asian tragedy, stoking concern that a feature meant to make the upgraded Max safer than earlier planes has actually made it harder to fly.
Boeing is in crisis as most of the world grounded the plane. On Wednesday, US regulators joined the global chorus by grounding the plane, citing evidence showing the Ethiopian Airlines flight may have experienced the same problem as the plane that went down five months ago off Indonesia.
“With extensive grounding of the 737 Max, near term news could get worse for Boeing before it improves,” Cai von Rumohr, an analyst with Cowen & Co., said in a note. However, he added, because the company is readying an update to its flight-control software, “we don’t see meaningful long term risk.”
Indeed, the only real rival to Boeing is European plane maker Airbus, whose production line for the A320neo is full well into the next decade. Alaska Air Group Inc. said Wednesday it would take delivery of its first Max aircraft.
VietJet, Flyadeal
VietJet is monitoring the situation and will reach a decision on whether to go ahead with its purchase following “official conclusions” from global regulators and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, it said in a statement Wednesday.
Utair told RIA Novosti that it’s waiting for results of the Ethiopian crash probe before proceeding with the first delivery on an order for 30 737 Max jets. The company is seeking assurances from Boeing, it said.
Flyadeal, a unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines, said in December it would switch from Airbus and purchase up to 50 737 Max jets, subject to final terms being reached. The company says it’s waiting on the results of the investigation. “We’re closely monitoring the situation and are in constant contact with Boeing,” the company said in an email. “There are no conclusions to be drawn at this time.”
Lion Air was already looking at scrapping its Boeing deal after October’s crash, which killed 189, and the latest disaster has made co-founder Rusdi Kirana more determined to cancel the contract, according to the person familiar with the situation, who asked not to be named as the plans are private.
Kenya Airways will consider switching to Airbus or could opt to take more an the older version of the 737 Boeing jet, which doesn’t feature the suspect system, Chairman Michael Joseph said in an email, without ruling out sticking with the Max. The company revived plans to expand its network last year with a proposal to buy as many as 10 of the planes worth about $1.2 billion.
Some 32 of those killed in the Ethiopian crash, which occurred six minutes after take-off from Addis Ababa, were Kenyan citizens, the most for any single country.
“We will carefully follow the developments around the 737 Max,” Kenya Airways’ Joseph said. “No decision has been taken yet.” Sub-Saharan Africa’s third largest carrier is almost 50 per cent state-owned after a reorganisation in 2017.
Kenya Airways has about 40 aircraft including eight 787 wide-bodies and the same number of an older version of the 737, the 800. The Dreamliner fleet will likely expand to add long-haul services, Joseph said, requiring more smaller planes to feed them with customers. Those might include turboprops and Airbus A220 or Embraer SA E2 regional jets, as well as 737-sized models.

Garuda Indonesia to cancel Boeing 737 MAX order
Garuda Indonesia is set to cancel their order for 49 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft following the two fatal crashes that have killed 346 people in less than six months.
Although the airline acknowledges Boeing will have a fix for the aircraft, passenger confidence has been eradicated, potentially making it hard to operate flights with the aircraft.
The airline has sent a letter to Boeing requesting the cancellation, however is yet to receive a response. Placed in 2014, the order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft was valued at around $6 billion at list prices. Garuda has only taken delivery of one of these aircraft so far and is discussing whether to return the aircraft to Boeing or to keep it.

Garuda remains limited on their answer to new aircraft should their request for cancellation move forward, however has no plans to add Airbus narrowbodies. Current discussions within the airline involve converting their 737 MAX order to other Boeing aircraft, including small widebodies.
Lion Air has also expressed their thoughts on cancelling their order for the Boeing 737 MAX, however no further information has come from the airline.
The fallout of the two crashes has left a lot of airlines and passengers weary of the 737 MAX, and although Boeing argues it’s a safe aircraft, passengers with common or minimal knowledge on the topic will tie the aircraft type to the accidents.
It’s unknown how long this fallout will last, however it will go down as one of the most covered topics in modern aviation history.

Budget Saudi Arabian carrier, Flyadeal, has said a decision on its Boeing 737 MAX order is imminent after the airline has been assessing whether to continue with the order after two fatal crashes or switch to another aircraft.
With 30 737 MAX 8s on order with options for 20 more, the potential $5.9 billion dollar deal would only be a dent in Boeing’s 737 backlog if lost, however would further damage passenger confidence and investor backing following media outbreak.
In an interview with Reuters, the CEO of Flyadeal, Con Korfiatis, said the following:
“We’ve kept an open position in terms of which way we’ll go on the fleet given the situation with the MAX. At the moment we still don’t have a decision but it is imminent.”
Since the deal is only a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), if Flyadeal cancels, there will be little to almost no penalties as no contractual agreements have been defined.
Following the cancellation, Flyadeal has said it would order the Airbus A320neo, which is the direct competitor to the 737 MAX. This wouldn’t alter Flyadeal’s plans too much as they already operate a fleet of current engine option A320s, allowing for simplified training.
Despite the fact that Boeing has tested new software for the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) that’s being held accountable, it takes a lot more to repair passenger confidence.
