A MAN who left his identity card behind in a cab after robbing a relief taxi driver was jailed for three years and ordered to be caned 12 strokes for robbery.
Hong Wee Seng, 30, on Tuesday admitted to robbing Mr Ng Lye Hock, 59, of $10 near the carpark of Block 533 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 at about 12.50am on Aug 4. Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Lee told the court that the construction worker boarded Mr Ng's taxi along Aljunied Road towards Ang Mo Kio Street 61. Along the way, he decided to rob the victim as he had no money. When the taxi stopped near Block 533, he pulled back the victim's seat belt with his left arm to restrain him and pointed a small screwdriver at his neck. He demanded money from Mr Ng who handed over five pieces of $2. Hong fled but left behind a card holder with his identity card. He was arrested at the void deck of his block the next day. Hong, who has previous convictions for drug-related offences and was last jailed for theft, could have been jailed for up to 14 years and caned at least 12 times.
