Blast rips through mamak restaurant
A powerful blast, believed to be caused by a home-made bomb ripped through a mamak restaurant in Johor Baru early Monday.
Residents of houses nearby were jolted awake by the powerful explosion at the Stulang Corner restaurant that was under renovation and scheduled to reopen for business on Dec 5.
The blast demolished the restaurant’s back wall and ceiling and sent debris flying several metres away.
No one was injured in the incident which occured at about 2.15am.
Police believe that the yet identified explosive device or devices were thrown into the restaurant through a ventilation hole in the kitchen.
Residents had seen several men loitering in the area just before the explosion.
Located on the main road, Stulang Corner is about 1km away from the Tengku Mahkota of Johor’s palace - Istana Pasir Pelangi.
Police have ruled out terrorist involvment and suspect that business rivalry or sabotage ciuld be the motive for the attack. Devi, a resident of the five-storey flats nearby said the loud explosion awoke her family.
"We thought something terrible had happened at the five-storey flats. People started evacuating the two blocks."
"We were shocked to find the back of the restaurant collapsed and bits of metal and concrete all over the place," she said.
Tahir...estimated the losses to be between RM100,000 and RM150,000
Restaurant manager Tahir Ali, 39, who estimated the losses to be between RM100,000 and RM150,000, said renovation work had been going on for the past two months.
