Bishan doctor fined, warned for prescribing drugs irresponsibly
Posted: 11 November 2011 1036 hrs

SINGAPORE: Another general practitioner has been convicted of inappropriately prescribing benzodiazepines, a hypnotic drug, and cough-mixtures containing codeine.

Dr Tan Hui Hoon of Drs Goh & Tan Family Clinic & Surgery at Bishan Street 22 was censured and fined S$5,000 after she pleaded guilty to four charges.

But she was not suspended from practice unlike earlier cases.

In a press release dated Friday, The Singapore Medical Council said the 50-year-old doctor faced fewer charges compared to earlier cases.

It added that "the character references and the good that can be said of Dr Tan was (also) compelling".

Dr Tan has been ordered to provide a written undertaking to the Council that she will not engage in similar conduct.

The Council's Disciplinary Committee heard the case against Dr Tan on 28 September this year following a complaint from the Health Ministry in 2009.

On Thursday, the Council suspended a doctor in Yishun for three months after he pleaded guilty to nine charges of prescribing codeine-containing cough mixtures and hypnotic drugs to patients.

The Council said then that prolonged prescription of codeine-containing medication and/or the hypnotic drug is inappropriate, unprofessional and potentially addictive and may cause harm to patients.
