GEORGE TOWN - A man who was supposed to celebrate his 24th birthday yesterday ended up in the intensive care unit after a gang attacked him with sharp weapons.
A police spokesman said the assailants comprising ten men stabbed and slashed him with sharp objects believed to be parangs.
"The victim sustained stab wounds on his stomach and injuries on his face as well as hands," he said.
The 9.30pm incident happened when the man was waiting to celebrate the occasion with his girlfriend when the group confronted him at a densely-populated flats in Bandar Baru Air Itam.
It is learnt that there was a scuffle between the victim and the group following a heated argument.
They then cornered and attacked the victim. He tried to put up a fight but was no match for the assailants.
The victim is reported to be in a critical condition at the Penang Hospital.
State Criminal Investigations Department deputy chief Assistant Commissioner Nasir Mohd Salleh confirmed the incident.
He said a suspect had been detained for investigations and the police was hot on trail of the remaining suspects.
