MALACCA: A gang responsible for several recent motorcycle theft cases was busted by police with the arrests of four suspects in separate raids here last week. The gang, known as “Kumpulan Boy Air Merbau”, is believed to have been responsible for eight motorcycle thefts since July. The machines were later stripped and sold as spare parts.

State deputy CID chief Supt Hamdan Majid said that among the suspects were two college students studying mechanical engineering at two local institutions, a mechanic and a factory worker. Each member is believed to be tasked with a certain job, such as stealing motorcycles, stripping and installing the spare parts.

Some of the parts were sold while the frames were disposed of in ponds and bushes, he said, adding that police also detained another 19-year-old youth for buying the stolen items. He added that police recovered two motorcycles, seven motorcycle frames and three motorcycle engines worth some RM56,000 from a makeshift workshop in Jasin, including a motorcycle belonging to the youth.

He said those arrested were between 19 and 25, including the mastermind, a mechanic nicknamed Boy who is from Air Merbau, Jasin. Police were also tracking down two more gang members from Lorong Pandan and Kandang respectively. Hamdan said the four suspects would be remanded until today and would be charged for motorcycle theft, receiving and disposal of stolen property.
