Beware! I upgraded OS of iPhone and my Singtel bill shot up
STOMPer Maverick warns fellow STOMPers to be more aware of data charges when using smartphones, as his SingTel bill skyrocketed after he upgraded the operating system of his iPhone.
He said:
"I've been using my iPhone for almost 11 months without any hiccups until I decided to upgrade my phone OS to 3.1.2.
"After upgrading of the OS, all the apps and every other thing remained the same and therefore I didn't bother to check. I got a shock when I receive the montly bill which came up to $405. I was being charged $288.95 for 57790kbyte which is equivalent to 58MByte.
"I did a search on the SingTel website regarding my iTwo Plus price plan and found nothing on it.
"When I went to the SingTel shop to confront them about it, they couldn't answer me.
"When the billing department contacted me, they too couldn't find anything on the data price on the price plan that I chose.
"When they called me back, they said it was stated in some other pages which are not linked to the iTwo Plus price plan site at all, stating the use of the broadband is pay-per-use and also the price for it.
"I told them I didn't subscribe to it at all, and asked why SingTel sent me data. I had no choice because I had set my mail as push mail in my iPhone and all the while I had stopped the data until I upgraded the OS and data started coming in again through the cellular data network.
"I argued that it is unfair to charge me. I only upgraded my software for the maximum of 3 days before I changed to a data plan, which adds up to 8 days max, I even called them up to confirm that my plan had been changed before I started using data.
"After I did more research, I found that the cheapest price plan for a 12 GB data is only at $39.90 which is the iFlexi lite and if you were to use more than 12 GB, they will cap it at $30 extra which adds up to $69.90, a huge difference compared to my iTwo Plus plan.
"My mum also came across a newspaper article about a lady who didn't know about the data charges and was charged a high fee too.
"SingTel only replied that you can easily check the price of the data on the Internet or SMS to them on some number.
"It is atrocious to charge customers at such an expensive rate for the tiny bits of data and it is extremely ridiculous to cap the data price for non-data plan at $300.
"I admit this is partly my fault because I know of the charges and I already turned off my data but please be aware that there are many people out there who use smartphones who don't know about all these charges."
