NEW DELHI (DPA) - At least 28 people have died after consuming illegally brewed alcohol in northern India, police said on Friday (Feb 8).
The deaths were reported in two separate areas in adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand states.
The victims had consumed the toxic alcohol late on Thursday and police are working on the assumption that it may have come from the same source.
Twelve deaths were reported from two adjacent villages in Uttarakhand, a police official said. At least eight others in the villages were in serious condition.
Sixteen deaths were reported from a cluster of villages in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, police official Vidyasagar Mishra said, adding that several people were being treated in hospital and some were in critical condition.
An average of 1,000 people, mostly from the poorer sections of society, die in India each year after consuming illegally brewed alcohol, according to National Crime Records Bureau.
The liquor is usually made with poor-quality ingredients, and sometimes mixed with industrial alcohol and toxic substances. Deaths as a result of consuming such alcohol hit the headlines regularly.
In some of the worst cases of such poisoning, 200 people died in 1992 in Odisha state, 180 in West Bengal in 2011 and 100 in the city of Mumbai in 2015.

India alcohol poisoning: Mumbai death toll tops 100

The death toll from alcohol poisoning in India's western city of Mumbai (Bombay) has crossed 100.
Police spokesman Dhananjay Kulkarni said the number of people who had died now stood at 102, and seven people including two women had been arrested.
He had earlier described the incident as the worst of its kind in the city in more than a decade.
Toxic alcohol deaths are a regular occurrence in India, where people often drink cheap bootleg liquor.
Residents of the Malad slum area fell ill after drinking the cheap homemade alcohol on Wednesday.
Mr Kulkarni said police have been unable to locate the outlets that sold the alcohol.

All of those who have died come from Laxminagar in Malad which is a sprawling slum in the north-west of the city.
A majority of the people who live here are daily wage labourers, and since most of those who have died are men, there are many families who have lost their only earning member.
Sarika Itkar, a 32-year-old woman lost her husband who worked as a sweeper. "I have two children. How am I going to look after them now?" she asked.
The government has announced compensation of 100,000 rupees ($1575; £995) for the families of those killed, and today some officials were in the slum verifying documents to distribute the money.
Locals say the alcohol was bought from unlicensed sellers who lived in the area, and it used to be sold in plastic packets for as little as 10 rupees for 50ml.

Police suspect the deaths were caused by methanol poisoning, but are still awaiting reports, Mr Kulkarni said.
Distilling alcohol safely requires a precise control of the temperature, because if that rises above a certain level then methyl alcohol can form. Sometimes, certain herbs or chemicals might be added to increase the strength or improve the flavour, and these can react badly with other chemicals.
At least 29 people were killed after consuming toxic alcohol in Uttar Pradesh state in January.
India has witnessed many other incidents of toxic alcohol deaths in the past:

At least 72 people have died and several others fallen sick from drinking illegally-brewed liquor containing toxic methanol in several villages in the northern India, officials said.
At least 64 deaths were reported on Saturday from Saharanpur and Haridwar - adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand states respectively - after drinking the poisonous liquor.
Eight more deaths were reported in another tragedy blamed on tainted liquor in Kushinagar district, also in Uttar Pradesh, regional official BD Gupta told the dpa news agency.
The majority of the deaths were reported from the village of Balpur in Uttarakhand. Authorities launched a crackdown and suspended police and officials.
In Saharanpur district, the death toll climbed from 16 to 36, top administrative official Alok Pandey told dpa by phone on Saturday.
The villagers had consumed the tainted liquor suspected of being laced with methanol on Thursday.
In the adjoining Haridwar district, the death toll had risen to 28 from 12 on Friday, Indian broadcaster NDTV reported.
Twenty-two people were admitted to hospitals in Saharanpur but were in stable condition, Pandey said.
The Saharanpur police, suspecting that the alcohol may have come from the same source, arrested 30 people, many of them bootleggers. They seized hundreds of litres of tainted liquor in raids.
Authorities in the region also suspended over 30 officials, including 10 policemen, on charges of negligence or collusion in the illicit trade.
They vowed to take strict action against the accused, saying they would demand death penalty for those involved in the illicit trade once the case reaches the court.
Later on Saturday, authorities in both states announced a compensation of 200 000 rupees ($2 800) each to the relatives of those killed.
Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India because the poor cannot afford licensed brands. Illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase potency.
