Mr Wong Meng Meng's decision not to stand for re-election as President of the Law Society comes shortly after the society was embroiled in an unpleasant spat with a band of lawyers unhappy over its actions over fellow lawyer M Ravi. The society had to hold an extraordinary general meeting three weeks ago, which drew over 500 members, in response to demands for an explanation over why one of its officials showed up at the High Court twice in July with a psychiatrist's letter that apparently cast doubts on Mr Ravi's ability to practise.

The recent saga was not the first time Mr Wong had faced dissent from members in his 27-month tenure.

In January last year, more than 100 lawyers, led by criminal lawyer Subhas Anandan, called for his and the entire council's resignation over a brouhaha over whether the society's top office-bearers should travel business-class.

Attempts to reach Mr Wong yesterday for his comments on why he was not standing for re-election were unsuccessful. The founder of WongPartnership will, however, stay on the council for one year as Immediate Past President.
