</TR><!-- headline one : end --><!-- show image if available --></TBODY></TABLE>

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to Mr Tan Shao Yi's letter, 'Is there a mechanism that prevents operators from blatantly introducing new surcharges?', on Tuesday.
The Public Transport Council has deregulated the setting of taxi fares and surcharges since September 1998. This provides taxi operators more flexibility to respond to changes in market conditions and to set prices based on factors such as supply and demand.
Taxi operators can decide to differentiate their pricing to better match supply and demand at different places and times. Looi Teik Soon
Secretary
Public Transport Council
