Fewer dustbins
'Part of heightened security efforts.'
MS BERNADETTE LOW, Manager, Corporate Marketing and Communications, SMRT Corporation: 'We thank Mr Heng Jun Jie for his suggestion to have more trash bins at MRT stations ('I have had to throw away used tissue paper but was unable to find a bin anywhere nearby.'; April13). As part of our heightened security efforts, the dustbins at SMRT stations, except those at street-level entrances and in public toilets, have been removed since 2004. The purpose is to minimise the possibility of bomb parcels and other undesirable items being deposited in bins. This is practised in railway stations of major cities such as London and Sydney. We seek the cooperation of commuters to keep our stations litter-free, and deposit the litter at the dustbins provided at station entrances.'
