I wonder how many remember Bernard the man who spent 29 years making our Zoo world famous, an icon and went on to build the World's first Night Safari.

He could not get along with old man's brother in law who became the Chairman of the Zoo after the demise of founding visionary Chairman Dr Ong Swee Law.

Old Man's daughter in law takes over the Zoo and the Bird Park and hands it over to the famous MacDonald duo of Robert Kwan and Fanny Lai, the doyen of Hello Kitty. And you guessed it, just like the SMRT, food and catering took centre stage and not the animals. Ticket prizes shot up, food caused a bomb, and locals were prized out.

The current CEO was formerly with F&N and yes , another food and beverage man. Can you imagine his interview and how he convinced the board of directors his suitability to run the zoo. They probably asks him to how to price the drinks and food.

Well Bernard spends his time in Bali and travels the world designing zoos and wildfire parks. While we spend a fortune in scholarships and grants on foreigners looking for creativity and talent.

Getting into the zoo free for Singapore citizens is a political play conjured by Fanny Lai of MacDonald Hello Dolly fame. When Ho Ching and Temasek took over the Zoo, she hired Robert Kwan and Fanny Lai after the sale of the Mac Donald franchise. Both these goon hiked the zoo admission fees so high that most locals could no longer afford it.

The affordability issue started to smell as the Zoo is for the people of Singapore not for the Prime Ministers wife to showcase her financial acumen.

The birthday free angle became a masterstroke because on paper every Singapore is entitled to one free admission a year. Sounds remarkably wonderful. Few people go to the zoo by themselves. It is usually a full day or half day event. It is usually a family or friends outing. It's one of those sales gimmicks where free item is paid for by other items.

Fanny Lai now passes herself of as a wildlife expert and drops the MacDonalds past to foreigners.

River Safari

River Safari launches cruise attraction

SINGAPORE - A cruise launched by wildlife park River Safari will take visitors on a 15-minute scenic ride around the Upper Seletar Reservoir.

The cruise plies the man-made lake along the outskirts of the Night Safari and Singapore Zoo. Visitors may spot animals such as giraffes, elephants and rhinoceros on the edges of both parks.

They may also see native species, such as the long-tailed macaque and water monitor lizard, which live around and in the reservoir.

The new attraction, which costs $5 for adults and $3 for children aged between three and 12, in addition to admission tickets to the park, replaces the previous cruise at the Singapore Zoo, which closed on March 31.

Unlike that ride, which was to get visitors from the entrance of the zoo to its farthest point, the latest cruise takes visitors on a round-trip scenic journey along a different route.

This will be River Safari's second boat attraction, after its 10-minute Amazon River Quest ride, which takes visitors down a man-made river within the park. Ticket prices for both rides are the same.

Wildlife Reserves Singapore chief executive Lee Meng Tat said: "The new one is an entirely different experience. It's very tranquil and peaceful, and, if you're lucky, you get to see animals going about their daily lives."

The River Safari Cruise runs daily from 9.30am to 5.30pm. Each cruise can accommodate up to 50 passengers and is wheelchair-accessible.

I went once and vow never to return again. It is one of the worst 'zoo' in the world. I consider it a seafood aquarium that you can't eat the seafood.

Noted that the Mandai area will be used for biodiversity conservation, with the Night Safari, River Safari and the Zoo, coupled with the BirdPark to form a Wildlife Reserves Singapore. Imagine commercializing the whole darn place...
