FOR the second time in two years, China's authorities have launched a security crackdown in Beijing that will push ethnic minorities out of the capital.
The impetus this year - last year was the Olympics - is the Communist Party's gala celebration of 60 years of rule, which will culminate in a massive military parade on October 1 in Tiananmen Square.
Vice-Minister of Public Security Zhang Xinfeng said police would crack down on criminal gangs and would work to curb robberies, theft and "phone scams" in an effort to maintain social order. He said the aim was to promote "a harmonious environment" for the nationwide celebrations.
