No frets, large regrets
BOTH Mr George Yeo and Mrs Lim Hwee Hua have decided to quit politics ("George Yeo pledges to help transform PAP", Wednesday; and "Lim Hwee Hua says: No more elections for me"; Thursday).
We have taken many of the current and past political office-holders for granted. We should not assume that many of them will come forward just for the financial rewards but to serve a more noble purpose.
Those who continue to serve today, serve out of a sense of duty and responsibility to Singapore and its people.
Watching this GE unfold and the aftermath, it is not difficult to understand why it is very hurtful for political office-holders, who sincerely believed that they had done their very best for the people, to continue to be at the receiving end of relentless verbal and written abuse online, at rallies and in written publications.
We learn to value what we had only when it is lost. The people of Aljunied GRC have lost Mr Yeo and Mrs Lim as their MPs forever.
