Beggar displays 'kung fu' moves

IPOH: A beggar, believed to be suffering from mental problems, created a stir by displaying some "drunken kung fu" moves when officers from the Welfare Department tried to round him up in an operation here.

The man, in his 50s, pounded and kicked on the wall and door of an office in Jalan Yang Kalsom for about five minutes before he calmed down.

In the 12.30am incident yesterday, the man, who was only in a pair of trousers, tied with a nylon string, also hurled abuses when the officers tried to approach him.

Fearing that the man would become more aggressive and whip out a sharp weapon, Kinta Welfare Department officer Mohd Mahir Mohd Tahir, who was present at the scene, had no choice but to call in the police for help.

Several traders in the area claimed they felt disturbed by the man's presence as he constantly asked for money besides sleeping on the five-foot way for more than a year now.

While waiting for the police to arrive, the man who continued to show off his "kung fu" moves, tried to wriggle his way out by going into a dark alley.

Police then checked the area and found him loitering at a shop about 300m from where he was found earlier.

He voluntarily gave himself up and was taken into the Ipoh city Council lorry.

Mahir later said the beggar was given a proper bath by Welfare Department employees.

He said although not in the right state of mind, the man was still given proper treatment.

He was given food and a new set of clothes.

"We will send him to a temporary shelter," he added, saying that the man was part of a group of beggars and vagrants who were rounded up in an operation in the city centre here.
