SINGAPORE : Armed men made off with about half a million dollars worth of jewellery during a daylight robbery in Bedok Central on Friday.

Police received a call at around 3pm about the incident at Block 210.

Witnesses told Channel NewsAsia that they heard a woman yelling from Yong Sheng Goldsmith.

Eyewitness Amanda Tan said: "I heard someone shouting. So I and my colleagues thought there was some fight outside, so we wanted to go out to see. Then I heard someone run across and shout "robbery, robbery" in Chinese.

By then, the shutters were rolled down halfway. Peering into the shop, they claimed to have seen three masked men, all dressed in black.

They said two of the suspects jumped over the counter, while the other stayed put.

The witnesses said the ordeal lasted about two minutes, after which three men paced out rather calmly. Two of them were carrying bags, and the other, a knife that was about 30 centimetres long.

Eyewitness Sarina Goh said: "They carried a sling bag, then they kept quiet and ... walked like normal people."

The police said the suspects got away on two motorbikes with an assortment of jewellery valued at half a million dollars.

The suspects are believed to be three Chinese males.

$500,000 armed robbery at Changi goldsmith shop

April 25, 2010

Three armed robbers made off with jewellery worth more than $500,000 from a goldsmith shop at Block 210, New Upper Changi Road on Friday afternoon. The masked men, who were armed with knives, had entered Yong Sheng Goldsmiths at 3.30pm on Friday and pulled down the shutters.

The masked men had gone into the goldsmith shop and shouted at the four female employees to go behind the display counters and squat down, reported Shin Min Daily News. One employee, who wanted to be known only as Ms Zhang, said one of the robbers forced open the locks, and another one emptied over 10 trays of gold necklaces, bracelets and bangles into a bag.

Ms Zhang said that all three robbers were holding knives that were about 50cm long. She said the whole ordeal lasted less than five minutes. No one was injured during the attack. A police spokesman said that the three suspects are believed to have fled on two motorcycles towards New Upper Changi Road after the robbery.

No one has been arrested. The spokesman added that the suspects were last seen wearing helmets and clad in dark-coloured long-sleeved tops and jeans.

Anyone with information should call 1800-2550000.

Goldsmith robber pleads guilty

<!-- by line --> By Elena Chong

<!-- end left side bar --> <!-- story content : start --> THREE men wearing helmets, surgical masks, sunglasses and gloves pulled off an $857,400 heist at a goldsmith shop in Bedok Central in broad daylight earlier this year, a district court heard on Thursday. Koh Koon Hong and Lee Yeow Kwang were each armed with a knife while Tan Choon Huatcarried a crowbar. Both Tan, 52, and Lee, 48, are on the run.

Koh, 35, who was arrested four days after the robbery, admitted to robbing Yong Sheng Goldsmith at Block 210 New Upper Changi Road with his accomplices while armed with a 45cm-long knife on April 23. He also admitted to theft of a motorcycle and riding without insurance coverage that day. The court heard that Tan had roped Koh and Lee into his plan to commit robbery. All three familiarised themselves with the escape route ahead of job.

The trio walked into Yong Sheng at about 3.25pm that day and held up four sales assistants. Tan prised open the drawers with the crowbar and scooped out the jewellery into a sling bag. They left the shop with two sling bags filled with gold items, which were sold by Tan to one New Chee Seng for $510,000. Tan gave Koh $80,000 as his share, of which $38,000 had been recovered.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Christina Koh pointed out several aggravating factors in the case such as pre-meditation, severity of the offences, and Koh's previous record for voluntarily causing hurt, moneylending and drug offences. Despite having been sentenced to eight years and 10 strokes in 2003, Koh had not learnt his lesson nor changed for the better, she added. District Judge Lee Poh Choo postponed sentencing pending a corrective training report on Sept 23.

A MAN who robbed a Bedok Central goldsmith shop of $857,441 worth of gold jewellery with two others was sentenced to seven years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane on Thursday. Koh Koon Hong was also banned from driving all vehicles for three years upon his release from prison.

The 35-year-old had pleaded guilty to the heist at Yong Sheng Goldsmith at Block 210 New Upper Changi Road with Tan Choon Huat, 52, and Lee Yeow Kwang, 48, while armed with a 45cm-long knife at about 3.35pm on April 23. He had also admitted to theft of a motorcycle and riding without insurance coverage. Three other charges were considered during his sentencing.

The court was told that the trio donned helmets, surgical masks, sunglasses and gloves when they struck at the premises. While Koh and Lee stood guard over three women sales assistants, Tan jumped over the counter and broke the showcases with a crowbar before scooping the jewellery into a sling bag.

All three escaped on two stolen motorcycles and later got into a waiting car at a multi-storey carpark. They sold the loot to a goldsmith at City Plaza for $510,000. The goldsmith melted the items into five gold rods which were later recovered by the police. Koh, who was arrested four days later, was given $80,000 by Tan. Only $38,000 was recovered from him.

The loot must be darn good profit! Buy robbery loot is a very serious offence! As reported in the news, apparently he also attempted to destroy the evidence ("把收据销毁") which further prove his dishonesty, obstructing police investigation, and poor Bedok goldsmith after kena robbed got to close down biz :(

Price to pay for being greedy and dishonest! One of my relatives actually went to one of his outlets in Chinatown to sell her gold and later realized the weight of her gold valuables was incorrect! She suspected her gold valuables were placed on a tampered weighing scale reflecting a lesser weight. What high price buy in, its all bullsh1t!Some time back in year 2010 there's a news report 「阿嫂险些被吃秤头」 on weight cheating published in 【新明日报】, the report is exactly what my relative encountered

Its wrong to delude customers into selling gold valuables by quoting unrealistic high gold rate, and weight cheating is no difference from stealing!

More update on Bedok Robbery. The unscrupulous Jeweller New Chee Seng of 1st Jewellery tio stomped!

jeweller_accused_of_melting_down_stolen_gold_items-thumbnail.jpg

WITHIN hours of robbing a goldsmith in Upper Changi Road of $857,441 worth of jewellery last year, a suspect is believed to have sold the stolen items to a jeweller in Geylang for $510,000.

New Chee Seng, the 42-year-old proprietor of 1st Jewellery in Geylang’s City Plaza, proceeded to melt the loot down, producing five gold bars weighing 10.8kg.

This put him on the wrong side of the law, which requires him to have kept the items for three days before melting them down, unless he had sought and been granted permission to do so by the Criminal Investigation Department.

Yesterday, he was charged with melting the stolen items.

If convicted, he could be fined up to $5,000 and/or jailed up to six months.

New, also known as Larry Liang Zhi Cheng, was also charged with failing to retain a record of the purchase of the jewellery. He is believed to have destroyed the receipt, a document which would have shed light on the identity of the person who had sold him the stolen goods.

The maximum punishment for failing to keep these documents is a $20,000 fine and a year in jail.

New will reappear in court in two weeks’ time. No bail was required as this was a summons case.

Court papers said he bought the gold from Tan Choon Huat, 53, believed to be one of three men who robbed Yong Sheng Goldsmith on April 23 last year.

Tan and alleged accomplice Lee Yeow Kwang, 49, are believed to be on the run overseas; the third man, Koh Koon Hong, 36, was arrested four days after the heist. He is serving a seven-year jail term and was given 12 strokes of the cane.

A second-hand goods dealer who bought assorted gold jewellery which he melted and cast into five gold bars was fined $8,000 on Thursday for destroying the purchase receipt.

New Chee Seng alias Lary Liang Zhicheng, 43, pleaded guilty to failing to keep records of gold jewellery bought from Tan Choon Huat on April 23, 2010.

Tan, then 52, is believed to have been involved in the $857,441 armed robbery at Yong Sheng Goldsmith in Bedok Central with two others, one of whom has been sentenced to seven years' jail and 12 strokes of the cane.

The court heard that in October 2009, Tan approached New, owner of 1st Jewellery, at his shop in City Plaza, and enquired if he would buy a large amount of gold from him in cash. New agreed.
