<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to Thursday's letter by Ms Tan Lay Hong, 'Esplanade concert: Ruined by technical glitches'.
We would like to thank Ms Tan for taking the time to give us her feedback. We do sincerely apologise that the Cai Quifeng concert did not meet her expectations last Saturday. To ensure that we were able to determine the problem correctly and respond with an accurate account of the evening, our assistant customer service manager, Ms Sanchia Fang, gave Ms Tan a follow-up call on Tuesday, after looking into the matter. I also reverted with a written reply to Ms Tan on Wednesday.
The Cai Qiufeng concert was organised as part of Esplanade's A Date With Friends celebration - an annual series presented especially for senior citizens during Singapore's Active Ageing Festival.
We recognise that it was very disappointing when the show had to be interrupted, resulting in a concert experience that did not meet expectations that night. We have worked very hard to build a solid international reputation for good acoustics and overall concert experiences to ensure audiences' enjoyment of our programmes and we regret that this has been affected by Saturday's incident. The problem that evening was caused by a glitch in the electronic network that manages the sound system. Due to the glitch, no signal was transmitted through the speaker system, although the sound monitors on stage were still working as they were on a separate network. The band continued playing as they could hear themselves without realising that the audience could not hear them. As the problem was due to a computer software issue, the technical crew had to painstakingly track the root of the problem first, before systemically remedying the problem. Much as we try to have a range of contingencies to ensure that performances at Esplanade are flawless, the nature of live performances and our dependency on technology is such that glitches like this do happen.
This is the first time such a glitch has happened at Esplanade after over 10,000 live performances since our opening six years ago and we do apologise, once again, to Ms Tan, for the less than positive experience she had, and for not getting back to her on the day itself. We would like to assure her that her experience at Esplanade and the enjoyment of our performances is of utmost concern to us. We will work very closely with our equipment suppliers to ensure this does not happen again.
