A relief teacher going through marital problems took them out on a nine-year-old autistic pupil, a court heard, by throwing a volleyball at his head and threatening to put him in a cage during a physical education (PE) class.

The 33-year-old man, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, also locked the boy in an equipment room with the lights and fan switched off.

He was sentenced to three months' jail and fined $3,000 by a district judge on Monday (Oct 8), having previously pleaded guilty to one charge each of child abuse and wrongful confinement of the boy, who is now 10.

The first incident took place during a PE lesson on March 6 last year, when the boy - who also has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) - had been pacing back and forth in front of his classmates while the teacher addressed the class. The man threw a volleyball at the pupil's head three times in front of the group. He later lifted the cover of a metal cage used to store equipment and threatened to put the boy inside it - even asking his classmates if they wanted to see him caged.

When the boy did not participate in a class activity, he grabbed the boy forcibly and took him to a PE equipment room where he scolded him. Two days later, in another lesson, the teacher locked him in the equipment room with the lights and fan switched off for around a minute and a half. When recounting this incident to an Institute of Mental Health consultant later that year, the boy "was very angry, screamed and hyperventilated", according to court papers.

This was good enough reason to have the boy caged.

The judge has been too harsh on the pe teacher.

It is tough for parents to raise autistic children,
If the bastard dares to appeal, jail him for three years.

Hope the boy grows up and hunt the bastard down.

"The Accountant" Movie Quotes

Neurologist: Your son is a remarkable young man. He has highly advanced cognitive skills. He has more in common with Einstein or Mozart than he does with us. I'd like to work with your son, help him develop the skills he'll need to live a full life.

Chris's Father: That's not going to happen. The world is not a friendly place and that's where he needs to learn to live.

Chris: I have difficulty socializing with other people, even though I want to.

Chris's Father: You're different. Sooner or later, different scares people. You think if you don't fight back that maybe they'll like you, stop picking on you, calling you freak.

A good case in point here. All these special needs students should be channeled to a special school instead of main stream schools. Otherwise train all the teachers to handle special needs children. I think we are looking at minimally a Masters in Psychology.

They should be locked away in IMH. The kid was clearly deranged and belonged in a metal cage. The judge was too harsh on the good teacher.

Untrained relief teacher in place of a full-time trained teacher? Parents should seek a refund of fees paid. Their children had been short-changed. How can the Ministry allow an unqualified person to handle young innocent children? Furthermore, it is for Physical Education, one of the most dangerous lessons , if not the most dangerous, to conduct with lively students.

As always...PAP's approach - Got do Can already.

Autistic student schooled with normal kids?

Did the school inform the relief teacher of the student's condition?
Did the school provide the relief teacher with any guidance/pointers on classroom management?
How much is the relief teacher paid per hour?
Apart from the untrained, unqualified relief 'teacher', who is the real causative agent, the CRIMINAL?

A clear line must be drawn- as much as we want to be an inclusive society, it is not just a simple act of putting the two groups together and thinking integration is done.

Look at the recent mockumentary CNA did when put-two-cherries put two groups of students from two distinct groups together and hoping that mutual understanding and acceptance may therefore arise from the dialogue.

The facilitator and/or moderator had to be put in place to integrate the two groups together over time.

This is an interesting line of thought- how should teachers be trained?

The role of teachers isn't merely teaching of content- they must:
1, possess a good moral compass and model good behavior;
2. possess a good understanding of child psychology and learning behavior; and
3. possess a tonne of patience to deal with children who behave like brats, as well as their overgrown counterparts also known as parents.

Is the school ground the best place to train a teacher? Are teachers sufficiently trained? Shouldn't teachers undergo something like housemanship since we are dealing with "young patients with afflictions" all the time?

very challenging to run a special needs school as more sinkie kids are diagnosed with all kinds of adhd, asperger syndrome, down syndrome, and spastic characteristics. there's no cookie cutter special needs school that can sextisfy and accommodate all special needs kids. every kid is different with special needs. some are geniuses, some are morons. and a thin line separates them. one day they may be morons the next day they may be geniuses, depending on circumstance, incentives, rewards, punishment and mood swings. these kinds of kids must attend x-men prep school where a botak in wheelchair can use his know-all ai to cater and customize curriculum for each individual. at least $6.9b program. raise gst to 69%.

Teacher's training in Singapore has come a long way. The National Institute of Education at NTU provides educators in Singapore with the basic foundation as you have listed out. There is even a module on Special Needs in the course curriculum. A trainee teachers is also required to undergo practicum in a school under the supervision of a teacher-mentor.

How well a student in school learns is very dependent on the teachers facilitating/imparting the knowledge and skills, likewise for trainee teachers on the course lecturers and supervisors. Acquisition of knowledge is seldom an issue. It's the skills component which could be better improved. IMHO, NIE needs to relook and restructure its course structure to better equip trainee teachers to face today's ever-changing environment.

Food for Thought:
Why are many passionate education officers disillusion and leaving the service after a couple of years in the service?

Good observation and analysis.
The present PAP-led Government refuses to acknowledge the shortcomings simpLEE because it prides itself to be the BEST. How good is Singapore Education when our students cannot compare with Shanghai students in ENGLISH, Mathematics and Sciences. For the sake of the people and the country, there is a need to redefine for a paradigm shift. Change or be changed.

Most of the baby boomers would have left the service by now, save for some who are back to do part time teaching. The skill set and experience of these teachers from the baby boomer years, have they been carefully and sincerely transposed to the newer generation of teachers?

I wonder what's the attrition rate for teachers now :coffee::coffee::coffee:

Actually why is tax payers money being wasted on retards? If these kids have problems. Their folks should send them to private schools or specialist that deal with such issues. The government should focus on the core education for the general population like maths science English . N 2nd language. Teach the basics well than add in other subjects. These retards make up 1% of the kids n they needs specialised education? Why must the tax payers deal with such issues. Talk about the tyranny of the minority
