Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli
Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Home Affairs, Masagos Zulkifli, is currently on a 6-day official visit to Bangladesh (1-6 Sep), accompanied by the High Commissioner of Singapore to Bangladesh and officials from the Foreign Affairs Ministry.
The trip is Mr Masagos’ first visit to Bangladesh in his official capacity. During his visit, Mr Masagos called on various leaders of Bangladesh. He will also be meeting members of the local business community and the Singapore community in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
During Mr Masagos’ call on the Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister’s Office on Mon (3 Sep), Ms Hasina urged the Singaporean government to recruit more skilled and semi-skilled workers from Bangladesh, especially in the hospitality and service sectors. Ms Hasina specifically made this request when Mr Masagos called on her.
Ms Hasina also called on the Singapore to import more Bangladeshi goods including world class pharmaceuticals, ceramics and garments. She also appealed to Singaporean entrepreneurs to invest in Bangladesh.
Singapore is among the top five exporters of goods to Bangladesh with balance of trade heavily tilted in favour of Singapore. Ms Hasina wants to increase Bangladesh’s export to Singapore in order to improve the balance of trade situation between the 2 countries.
Another way to improve Bangladesh’s balance of payment is of course to export more manpower to Singapore so as to earn S$.
According to the CIA World Factbook [Link], Bangladesh currently has an estimated unemployment rate of about 5%. However, About 40% of the population is underemployed with many participants in the labor force working only a few hours a week, at low wages.
During his meeting with PM Hasina, the Senior Minister of State Mr Masagos, praised Bangladesh’s tremendous successes in various fields as well as establishment of democracy under the dynamic and visionary leadership of PM Hasina.
