<!-- story content : start --> JAKARTA - THE US embassy in Indonesia on Thursday said it had received warning of a New Year terrorist attack from the governor of the resort island of Bali, the scene of multiple bombings targeting Westerners. In a statement carried on its website, the embassy said the Bali Tourism Board had widely distributed a message from Bali Governor Mangku Pastika warning of an attack. 'The Governor of Bali Mr. Mangku Pastika wishes to share a message with all of us: There is an indication of an attack to Bali tonight,' it quoted the message as saying. Revellers across the globe prepared Thursday to ring in the New Year with fireworks and festivities under tight security after a narrowly-averted Christmas Day airline bomb plot in the United States. Partygoers from Tuvalu to Tijuana were set to raise a glass to bid farewell to 2009 and usher in a new decade, closing the door on 10 years scarred by wars, terror attacks, natural disasters and financial turmoil. Heavy security - and a downpour of confetti - are in place for New York's traditional mass celebration of the New Year on Times Square. No backpacks or alcohol will be allowed in the square on Thursday, an intersection in the heart of Manhattan famous for its giant electric billboards, tourist attractions and nearby theater district. As huge crowds watch the famous Times Square crystal ball marking the final countdown to 2010, undercover police officers, surveillance cameras, uniformed teams and radiation and biological detection equipment, will be monitoring them. - AFP.

<!-- story content : start --> JAKARTA - THE Indonesian resort island of Bali faces a risk of attack on New Year's Eve, a statement issued by the US Embassy quoted the island's governor as saying, but the governor's office denied making any such comment. The statement quoted Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika as saying in a message distributed by the Bali Tourism board: 'There is an indication of an attack to Bali tonight, but please don't panic, but put your security system to full alert.' Officials at the US Embassy in Jakarta could not immediately be reached for further comment. But Putu Suardika, head of public relations at the office of the Bali governor, denied that the governor had made such a statement. 'No, he never said that, either in writing or verbally,' Mr Suardika told Reuters. 'We never put out any warning either written or spoken. Of course we in Bali, because we have had two bombs in the past, have to remain on alert.' Bali police spokesman Gde Sugianyar said police were not aware of a threat and always tried to ensure security was as tight as possible.

'There is no initial indication so far. Everything is running well and secure in Bali. For us, we don't consider whether there is any threat or not but we have been preparing security for the New Year's Eve to be as tight as it can.' Earlier, the US embassy in Indonesia said it had received warning of a New Year terrorist attack from the governor of the resort island of Bali, the scene of multiple bombings targeting Westerners. The embassy said the message had been 'shared verbatim for your information' but added that standard consular safety and security recommendations 'remain valid'. These remind US citizens that Indonesia has been targeted by 'violent elements' repeatedly since the Bali bombings of 2002 that killed 202 people, mainly foreign tourists including 88 Australians. The embassy advises citizens to keep a 'low profile' and be 'vigilant and prudent at all times', adding: 'US citizens must consider the security and safety preparedness of hotels, residences, restaurants, and entertainment or recreation venues that they frequent.' Police said 7,000 security personnel including US-trained counter-terrorism units were being deployed around bars and nightclubs on Bali as the island prepared to celebrate the New Year. -- AFP
