KANGAR, Malaysia - A bakery and two restaurants near the Balai Baru evening market were destroyed in a fire yesterday.
State Fire and Rescue Department commissioner Khairul Ariffin Che Ramli said no one was injured in the fire which began about 2.50pm.
He said the fire spread fast due to the half wooden structure of the shops.
Khairul said 19 firemen took about five minutes to put out the blaze, adding that the cause of the fire was still under investigations.
"When we reached, the shops were already 95 per cent destroyed. We estimate the losses at about RM35,000 (S$14,000)."
Restaurant owner Aisah Nawe, 36, who only began business two months ago, said she was in her shop when she heard screams and people informed her about the fire.
"I could not do much as the fire spread very fast. I ran out of the shop and stood there watching it burn to the ground," she said.
