Singapore is finally ending our drought of Olympics medals with at least a silver for the women’s table tennis team!
There are of course critics who will say that the team members are all imported from China. However, that seems to be the trend of competitive sports around the world. The Korean and even the US teams have China-born athletes. Dang Ye Seo, who is in the Korean team that lost to Singapore in the semi-finals, was formerly known as Tang Na in China before she received Korean citizenship last year. Our only medalist so far, Tan Howe Liang, was also born in China before coming to Singapore at the age of four.
Of course, Tan’s times are very different from today. His parents probably came to Singapore to seek a better life and his weight-lifting career took off on a separate track. Today, the likes of Le Jiawei, Feng Tianwei and Tao Li are identified for their sporting potential and attracted to Singapore.
No one can be sure that these talents will definitely win medals for their new adopted countries, nor can anyone be sure if they had stayed in their home country, whether they would perform as well, better or worse.
Some will even say that these foreign talents are not loyal and will easily give up their Singaporean citizenship subsequently to pursue a more lucrative coaching career in say, the US.
There are many “if’s”. What we can be sure of is that they have trained hard for their achievements, the country has invested in developing their excellence, and Singaporeans are all excited with the hope that our team could even win a gold medal at the finals!
Let’s all wish them all the best and be proud of them. Be proud of Singapore.

8月11日，陶李代表新加坡参加北京奥运100米蝶泳决赛，排名第五。虽然无法夺得一面奖牌，她却已经打破亚洲纪录。
陶李是中国湖北人，2002年来新加坡。2005年成为新加坡公民后，代表新加坡参加东运和亚运，为国争光。陶李年仅18岁，已经有如此卓越表现，如果继续努力锻炼，再接再厉，相信将来一定会游出更辉煌的成绩。
8月12日，非洲国家多哥(Togo) 赢得历史上首枚奥运会奖牌，选手Benjamin Boukpeti在皮划艇激流回旋男子皮艇(white water kayaking)决赛获得铜牌。
出生在法国的Boukpeti的母亲是法国人，父亲和二个姐妹则来自多哥，他只在小时候去过多哥一次。27岁的Boukpeti担心法国会以他的年龄太大为理由，而不把他列入国家队，因此选择代表多哥参加奥运。其实多数多哥人民不知道他是谁，但多哥政府仍然雀跃万分，计划安排Boukpeti回国大肆庆祝。
Boukpeti衣锦还乡，祖国多哥当然应该欢庆，虽然他跟多哥的唯一关系只是一半的血统。
其实与新加坡有点渊源的杰出人士也有几位，包括在新加坡出世的知名小提琴家陈美(Vanessa-Mae)，还有与新加坡人结婚的国际明星巩俐和周润发。钦佩他们的成就之余，无功不收禄。
祝福陶李能在2012年于伦敦奥运报捷。虽然她跟新加坡没有任何血缘关系，但新加坡到时也栽培了她十年，她也已经当了七年新加坡公民，在岛国度过她的成长岁月。
她的成就肯定是新加坡的骄傲，新加坡人也应该引以为豪。
