NIBONG TEBAL - A one-month-old baby boy died after a 2kg durian fell on him in a village in Jawi here.
The baby, known only as Mohd Yusuf, was being carried by his 26-year-old Indonesian mother.
She stepped out of the house to collect laundry when the incident took place at about 3pm yesterday.
The thorny fruit hit the boy right on the head.
He was then rushed to a nearby hospital where he died two hours later.
The woman also received treatment at the same hospital for minor injuries.
The woman, who wanted to be known only as Sarbini, passed out momentarily at the hospital.
She was heard mumbling "How could this have happened?" when she later regained consciousness.
Several Jawi voluntary patrol unit members said they could not come to terms with the incident as it was them who called the ambulance when Sarbini experienced labour pains about one month ago.
