</TR><!-- headline one : end --><!-- show image if available --></TBODY></TABLE>

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->WE THANK Mr Thomas Lee ('Shared footpaths: Why no update?', Aug 31) and Mr Hariharan Gangadharan ('Cycling on footpaths - a question of enforcement too', Forum Online, Sept 2) for their interest in the cycling trial in Tampines Town.
The cycling trial is currently implemented only in Tampines Town. The objective is to allow residents of Tampines Town to decide if the footway of roads can be shared by both pedestrians and cyclists, considering the unique characteristics within the town.
The one-year trial which started in May 2007 was further extended, after a survey commissioned showed that there was general acceptance for the trial to continue. This was to allow us to monitor if cycling on the footway of roads is feasible and sustainable if infrastructure, education and enforcement are to be implemented together.
We will announce the outcome of the trial later this year. In the meantime, cyclists can continue to share the footway of roads with pedestrians in Tampines.
We remind cyclists to cycle safely when using the footway of roads and to observe all relevant safety regulations.
We urge footway users to be gracious to one another to make travelling on the footways a safe and pleasant experience for all.
