A 29-year-old stole a wooden cross from the Kepler Church in Vienna-Favoriten on Friday afternoon. Witnesses and images from a surveillance camera provided clear evidence of the man, so he was arrested a short time later.
According to police spokesman Mattias Schuster, the man first tore a Madonna statue from its anchorage around 4 p.m., then took the cross with him. The Syrian citizen was temporarily arrested a short time later not far from the crime scene.
The man was then released. He probably belonged to the scene on Keplerplatz, but his motive initially remained obscure. However, political or religious reasons were ruled out. In any case, the cross is back in the church; a woman brought it back shortly after the crime.
