Australia's Victoria declares state of disaster, imposes curfew to contain COVID-19

MELBOURNE: A state of disaster was declared in Australia's Victoria on Sunday (Aug 2), with the local government implementing a night curfew as part of its harshest movement restrictions to date to contain the coronavirus.

State Premier Daniel Andrews said that the new restrictions, to be in place for six weeks until mid-September, will allow only one person per household to go shopping once a day. Melbourne residents will not be able to go further than 5km from home.

Melbourne, Australia's second-largest city, is already under a reimposed six-week stay-home order, but it has been struggling to rein in COVID-19 cases. Record numbers of new infections of the virus that causes the disease were reported last week, prompting warnings of further restrictions.

The state reported 671 new cases on Sunday, up from 397 cases on Saturday.

Australia has fared far better than many other countries in keeping the coronavirus from spreading, but at a high economic cost. It has recorded around 17,300 coronavirus cases and 200 COVID-19 deaths, but the recent surge in Victoria has proven difficult to contain.

Has the world gone crazy? This is the most futile human endeavor I have ever come across in my life.

Even if this extreme lockdown does stop the virus in its tracks what exactly is the goal after the 6 weeks is up? The virus is already endemic in every other state and pretty much every other country.

All that will happen is a chunk of OZ will be full of people with zero immunity and the virus will simply commence operations and cases will soar again.

The way to go is to follow Sweden's example. If OZ had gone the Swedish way from day one the country would be out of the woods by now and not have to worry about this particular strain ever again.

Postponing the inevitable is never a good idea.
