Aussie reveller dives from building, misses pool

</cite>
SYDNEY (AFP) - – An Australian man's birthday celebrations ended tragically when his attempt to dive from a first-floor apartment balcony into a swimming pool went wrong, police said Monday.

The 32-year-old was partying with friends on the Gold Coast in Australia's east late Sunday when he tried to jump from the building into the pool, but missed and plunged head-first onto the concrete pavement.

"Police investigations would indicate that he had dived from that balcony earlier in the night and landed in the pool," Queensland Police Service Superintendent Jim Keogh told reporters.

"And it was on his second attempt that he failed to make it to the pool. "He didn't miss it by much," he said, adding that the man died at the scene.

Keogh said the man had been with friends when the accident occurred and that police were investigating media reports that one of these had recorded the dive on a mobile phone.
