Attempted cable theft plunged 1,500 consumers in Sabah into darkness
KOTA KINABALU: The hour-long disruption in electricity supply on May 26 was caused by the attempted theft of an underground power cable in Jalan Sulaman near here, said Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) senior manager (asset management) Ahmad Fuad Md Kasim.
Giving details of the blackout, which began at 10.30pm, he said the attempted theft by a group of unidentified people affected 1,500 consumers who were left without power for an hour.
Immediate repairs were carried out to rectify the cable, which was found to have been cut by the thieves, he said in a statement on Sunday.
Ahmad Fuad said among the areas which were affected by the power disruption were Jalan Kokol, Pulutan, Menggatal, Kampung Tobongon, Kampung Sinagang and Kampung Sinulihan, which bordered Kota Kinabalu city.
The SESB has urged consumers to contact the 24-hour special SESB-police hotline at 088-282455 if they came across suspicious characters lurking near SESB power installations to facilitate investigations. - Bernama
